I was skeptical based on reviews read prior to purchasing. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of use and quality of the cassette converter. The device comes with a USB connector and headphones. The only downside is that the headphones are a really cheap quality, but that didn't make a difference to me as I don't plan to use them. The instruction book comes with steps for using PC or MAC for converting. Directions were simple and easy to follow. Battery life is dependent on batteries or USB plug in. You can use this device for either listening or converting to digital format. Converting to digital format is a lengthy process as you have to listen to the entirety of the song when creating the digital file. The overall functionality of this device is great! I was able to convert a cassette from 1982 and the sound quality wasn't too bad! I recommend this product.

This Cassette Tape Player is working well in Windows. And writing to Audacity. I have an Ubuntu Studio device, but there is no driver for Linux. Also, some interesting problems with the eject of this cassette deck. It is a ridiculous slide that is impossible to move and we've broken a fingernail trying to do it...we have use something else (a screwdriver) to force it to eject. Why in the world wouldn't we have an Eject button? Frustrating enough that this working device gets 4 stars But it records our old cassettes well...with Audacity. It's unfortunate I can't use it with my Ubuntu Studio, but fortunately, I had access to a Windows PC. It's properly saving our cassettes.

I bought this product to convert some audio books on cassette tapes to digital mp3 files. I was unsure whether to get this model (which requires Audacity software or something similar) or the model that does the mp3 conversion internally automatically. In the end I was glad I got this model to use with Audacity. Audacity, which is freeware, came in the package on a small compact disk although I already had it on my Windows PC (and it can be downloaded as well). The cassettes were 20-30 years old and had some hiss when played. But I reviewed a few YouTube videos about using the 'Noise Reduction' feature of Audacity and that really helped remove the hiss. Also some tapes, even with the hiss reduced, still sounded muffled. To improve those, I used the equalizer function to bump up the higher frequencies before saving as mp3 files. If I had used the device that converted to mp3 automatically, I would not have been able to remove the hiss and muffle. Instructions were fine and the package included a cable to run between the device and USB port on the laptop. It also had an inexpensive pair of ear buds that I didn't use. Did not insert batteries since it is powered when cabled to the PC. Playback volume and controls were fine but didn't use the device to "listen" for pleasure - just to rip the audio books one time each. It was a solid, affordable solution for me and now I am on the lookout for more titles by the same narrator/author combo from the cassette tape era. I was pleased with how well this turned out.

But then I suppose, what else should I have expected for the low price. But, as often happens I was persuaded by a 4 and half stars rating. And, it also had "auto-reverse", which most of these cassette units don't have anymore. My first complaint is the door, and how it latches and releases. It is very clumsy and user unfriendly. But, I could have gotten past that, except for as soon as I started recording, the auto reverse kept kicking in, and then it kept changing directions. And it took all of 2 and a half "whole" minutes for this to start happening. And from my long experience years ago, with recording and dubbing cassette tapes and such, I know this malfunction is caused by a weak activator, on the auto reverse mechanism. So, as soon as a tape gets a little age on it, these cheaper units have trouble playing them. The same tape worked fine on my regular tape deck unit. But it does not have auto-reverse, which is very important, if you don't want to have to keep flipping your tapes over by hand, to record side 2. Don't be fooled by the "auto-stop" feature, many of these sellers tout these days. Because they all should have that feature. But these days, few of these cheaper manufacturers are building units with auto reverse, which was once almost a standard feature, back in the 1970's and 80's. But I sure wish someone would build a truly quality unit, for producing mp3 files from cassette tapes. I would gladly pay a hundred or even two hundred dollars, for a descent quality unit. But all that seem to be out there now, with any quality to them, are older, mostly worn out looking machines, ND the sellers are usually asking very exorbitantly high prices for them. And it is such a crying shame, That about all we have to choose from that is new these days, is cheap junk. Because these units might work OK if you have a dozen or 2 dozen tapes to transfer. But I have hundreds of tapes to try to process, so this is getting to be very frustrating for me. (End of Rant :) )

Great for digitizing old cassette recordings.

This one is a bit of a puzzle to me. Hookup was real easy, and I found everything, so what can I do with this and what can I not do. It appears that a fully updated Windows 10 computer will work alongside with the Audacity program (latest updates installed). The device works as advertised. I hooked it up to my current Windows 11 computer, but, given the software just doesn't play well, is definitely a head turner. Audacity is the recommended software to use by Reshow, but alas, no go. I suspect that this is more of a driver issue, not a hardware issue. It would just be better if they had some other alternative software that might work with it, so that you can hit the ground running...

I am on my 3rd device. I like the way that it works with Audacity, so I keep using it. My first machine, after 7 months, stopped record the 2nd side. It would record side 1, auto-reverse, but then wouldn't pick up side 2. So, I was able to get a refund from Amazon (less a $5 restocking fee). The second machine lasted less than 3 months and then just died. Wouldn't run either attached to the computer OR with batteries. To the machine's credit, I have done hundreds of cassettes as I am digitizing the audio library of a non-profit organization. I also want to respond to Ellen Denham's review and the problem with the 9996 invalid device Error. I did not have this problem with my first machine, but did with the second and now the 3rd. There is a workaround where you can continue to use Audacity if you prefer to use that format. After I open and record a tape, then export, and then try to start another recording, is when I get the error. Workaround #1: Select Transport/Rescan Audio Device and the start your new recording. Shouldn't have to do that, but it takes a second and works every time for me. Workaround #2: Close out Audacity completely and reopen. I have only done this a few times, but it seems to work too. I usually just use #1. I still like this machine, and with the refunds keep using it. Hopefully this one will last longer as I only have a few more cassettes to do. I still recommend this product, just don't overuse it like I did (and be sure to clean occasionally) and with the workarounds being so minor, it is still worth it. I came back to add this. There have been a number of reviews/questions which mention a hissing issue. I would suggest trying the noise reduction feature. First highlight a few seconds of the audio where there is no sound (I use the part at the beginning of the tape, or usually the middle where the tape is turning over), then select Effect/Noise Reduction/Get Noise Profile. There are 3 adjustment things to use but not know how to use them, I just leave all three in the middle and it is fine. After getting noise profile, then select the entire track, then Effect/Noise reduction again, but this time select OK at the bottom. This pretty much deletes the hissing.

First of all, let me stress this device is not designed to make low quality recordings into high quality recordings, or even good recordings. However, digitizing analog recordings will allow one to clean them up some using good audio software. I use Sound Forge Audio Studio rather than Audacity because I already had Sound Forge when I bought this cassette player, Sound Forge cost me a lot while Audacity was free, and I know Sound Forge has the functions I want. I don't know about Audacity. So much for the advantage of converting cassette files to digital files. Now, about this player. First of all, its pros: at under $20 it's a bargain; its sound quality is okay, I guess. most of my cassette recordings, mostly interviews of now long-deceased family members, are transfers from mini-cassette recordings and so the sound quality is not great to start with, but as good as this player plays them, I believe it be very proficient at playing professionally produced cassettes. This player is heavy for its small size which indicates it's well-constructed. Time will tell. Some of the cons: the cord for the ear buds is way too short. As I monitor the player when I am transferring files I tend to pull the player from its place on the table when I move my head. The volume control and the 'open' latch are in a bad location. They're next to the USB plug and the ear bud plug making access to the volume control and latch difficult, especially if you have sausage fingers like I do. Locating the battery compartment requires some patience. I think this player is supposed to get its power through the USB cable but since it only supplies five volts and I don't know how much current, I installed batteries just to be sure power requirements are met. So far I've transferred one 90 minute cassette and the results were satisfactory. Due to the age and brittleness of the second cassette, I've had some problems but not the fault of the cassette player. Bottom line is, this is a very capable cassette player and, although some components of it have a cheap look, for $20 I don't think it can be beat. If I get what cassettes I have converted to digital files without this player failing, it will have been $20 well spent. I recommend it. UPDATE: I've had the Reshow Cassette player for about two weeks and transferred two or three 90 minute cassette tapes to my hard drive. Now the cassette play is DOA. Sorry, but I cannot recommend this item. I've changed my rating from four to two stars.
