This lava rock is perfect for my succulents and hoya plants! The pieces are a great size — not too big or dusty — and it’s 100% natural with no weird dyes or residue. It mixes really well with potting soil or coco coir to improve drainage. I also use it as a top dressing, and it makes my pots look super clean and professional. It’s nice knowing it’s pure volcanic rock, not synthetic. Definitely worth buying again!

I’ve been shopping around for a succulent/cacti gritty mix for quite some time now and couldn’t be happier that I decided to purchase this lava rock and make my own! Out of all the different top dressings and mineral amendments I use for my succulent collection, this is by far my favorite. Particularly for smaller succulents with extremely low water needs (such as Lithops, pictured with the lava rocks) I enjoyed using this as an attractive and quick draining substrate. For anyone else looking for unique substrate for their succulents, I’d definitely reccomend using this as a mix-in (although it could get a bit pricey for larger plants/pots) or as a top layer to contrast with smooth/rounded plants.

Looks great, tighter gaps than leca, plants like it. I’ve also gotten some as fireplace aggregate and that works too—slightly smaller particles than these, and cheaper per pound. Bonsai jack also sells a big bag for a similar per-pound price—note that this bag is only enough for a few small containers. These are about 1/4” in diameter on average and wick up water well. I like using lava rocks or pumice instead of perlite in potting mixes as well, and they help as a soil topper for gnats too.

I love the black rocks, it's easy to clean, beautiful shine, Smooth to the touch and it protects the plants from bugs. One thing be careful the Rock are pretty large, I had to break it up for some plants that have delicate and small roots. My little baby looks expensive (A touch of Class).
