Dream of You / You've Got a Date with the Blues

Helen Merrill: Four Classic Albums (AVID AMSC 1337) offers four early albums; the first “Helen Merrill”, accompanied by the Clifford Brown Sextet, dates from December 1954, a Gil Evans group accompanied “Dream of You” in mid-1956, “The Nearness of You” dates from 1957/58, and “You’ve Got a Date With the Blues” from 1959. What they have in common is the unvarnished lyric, sung with a degree of emotional detachment by a vocalist whose approach favoured slow ballads. Add to that sympathetic accompaniments and excellent sound restoration and the result is a winner.

This would otherwise be a fine collection of a seminal jazz vocalist. However, Track 1 starts in the middle and cuts out before the end. What gives?

First track"Don't Explain" is mutilated from 5:08 original length down to 4:15 in the most obvious, vulgar and disgusting fashion. Why they needed to do this atrocious mutilation when the whole disc fitting 2 albums (who knows what other tracks they mutilated also, I haven't listened to the whole disc yet) only clocks out to a 72:25 running time, I have no idea. I don't care if this entire set was one dollar instead of 10 - you don't do this to classic albums and then pretend it's the full original albums you're giving people a "deal" on.

These albums are sublime but let's be honest Helen could sing the Dictionary she has the power to mesmerize. All great American songbook classics done in a way that only Helen can do.

４枚のアルバムをまとめて２枚組にした海外輸入盤のこのシリーズ。しかし非常に残念なことに、CD1枚目の1曲目「Don't Explain」のイントロの部分がカットされてしまっていて、いきなり最初のフレーズから入っている。そしてこの曲の最後の部分はボーカルの途中からカットされ強制終了、いきなり2曲が始まります。最初はプレーヤーの調子が悪いのかと思い再度再生してみるも変わらず、やはりカットされているとわかり愕然とした。カットしたのか音源をダビングした際のミスなのかは不明、しかしジャケットの時間表示が4：15と実際は5秒以上とかなり短いことからダビングのミスだと思われます。せっかくの名作「ウィズ・クリフォード・ブラウン」が・・・台無し感が否めない。なんでこんなことになってしまったのか・・・しかし、名盤をまとめて効率よく聴くには良いCDだと思うので、それを分かったうえでの購入を・・・そういう点で私としては不満の残る結果となったのでマイナス★★としました。
