Perfect for children ages 6–9 who are new to coding, this highly visual workbook is a fun introduction to Scratch, a free computer coding programming language, that will take kids from playing games to creating them. With easy-to-follow directions and fun pixel art, DK Workbooks: Coding in Scratch: Games Workbook helps kids understand the basics of programming and how to create games in Scratch through fun, hands-on learning experiences. All learners need is a desktop or laptop with Adobe 10.2 or later, and an internet connection to download Scratch 2.0. Coding can be done without download on https://scratch.mit.edu. Simple and logical instructions help kids make their own Scratch Cat soccer game, design a ghost hunt that features a flying witch, animate a bouncing melon, or build a game to test reaction speeds. Children then can share the finished games with friends to see how they score. Kids can even test their coding knowledge with written vocabulary and programming quizzes at the end of each project. Supporting STEM education initiatives, computer coding teaches kids how to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically, and is quickly becoming a necessary and sought-after skill. DK's computer coding books are full of fun exercises with step-by-step guidance, making them the perfect introductory tools for building vital skills in computer programming. Review: This is amazing! So far, we've made the first 2 games together and optimized parts of the witch hunt to our liking. I try to explain to him what to do and why but he doesn't understand just yet, so it's basically me telling him what to do and him doing it. That's ok, he'll understand in time. He's excited, but I think my husband and I are even more excited about it. Review: Good introduction to Scratch. - Super easy introduction to Scratch. We opened the book and started programming right away. I think I could also give my kids the book and allow them to use it independently as well. Would recommend as an intro book for Scratch programming. Directions are clear and concise. Teaches a few programming "vocabulary" words such as: What are variables, loops, if-then statements, scripts, operators, etc. This book includes four programs to write: Fishball, Ghost Hunt, Rapid Reaction, and Melon Bounce All of these are simple games. At the end of each program there is a "Show you know" section - a quiz for kids to review what they have learned. The solutions are found in the back of the book. What I like about this is that Scratch is pretty easy to learn. So once my kids got the fundamentals down, they "played" on Scratch for a while. I'd much rather my kids "play" with programming and learn something in the process, wouldn't you? Yeah.

Good for young beginners
This is a nice little book, I wish it had more pages, I wanted to get a beginner book for my 10 year old who is interested in video game design. This was way too easy for him and he finished it in a week. It would have been less than a week had I allowed him to work on it more often. This was super easy for him, so this is definitely for younger kids. I just bought him the next book that hopefully has more projects that are more complicated. But this is a good beginner book for younger kids!

Good starter book
This was a great starter book to use. It was very short (my 8 year old did all projects within a few hours), but it was also a good "test" book to see if my child was going to be interested. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a Scratch workbook just to find out my child was no longer interested. Overall, the projects in this book were easy to complete and kept my child interested. Good buy for the price

12 year olds eyes were opened!
My 12 year old thought this was a babies book judging it by its cover... a great teaching moment was presented and turns out he LOVES it !!! He is totally into scratch now! He would rather do this than play video games!

They are awesome. They introduce concepts in a gentle way
I bought all the three DK publishing scratch workbooks. They are awesome. They introduce concepts in a gentle way. My daughter is 9 years old and loves working off the projects, games. At the end of a project/game, she shows off her work and we go over the questions at the end. It helps us discuss concepts in detail. We add more variations and she is enjoying. The structure makes it possible for her to work independently which I love. Would love to introduce python this way. Hope they will have something in Robotics.

Kids love it
This is a tough one. The book is 4+ stars, but the accompanying PC program is only average. Kids have been doing some coding in elementary school and I thought I'd pick up a book so that they can do some coding at home on the computer. They were happy to see hat they don't have to wait to go to school or login to their school supplied websites. They follow along in the book and are able to do more advanced coding than their school websites. I did find the interface with the program a little hokey, even though I am a programmer myself, but they like it for their purposes, like making things go in endless loops and run forever. If they really want to do something productive, they might be a little frustrated.

Excellent, engaging introduction to Scratch
My 8 year-old loves this book. Super Scratch Programming Adventure didn't hold his attention a couple years ago, but he's gotten completely hooked by this book. It's very easy to understand and the programs are a good balance between easy to understand and complex enough to be interesting. In fact, my 5 year-old (who wants to be like her brother) is able to copy much of the programs herself. She doesn't fully understand what everything means, but she's thinking about it and getting great exposure.

Excelente

This workbook is a great extension for kids to follow through themselves. Each programme game has questions to answer when they finish the game to check how much of the programming they have taken in .
