Mixed Feelings About This Flick
1) Timeliness of Delivery - 5 stars2) Packaging - 5 stars3) Plot - 2 starsThe plot doesn't seem to move forward at all; it gets stuck on three or four people learning about themselves as well as each other. Marijuana smoking, alcoholism, sexual experimentation, poorly-maintained relationships, poor parenting, irresponsibility, learning from one's mistakes in life, and much more, are the majority of the elements. But, giving up a friendship which was headed down a one-way path of self-destruction, because one of the characters learned enough about himself, that he realized he needed to sever the ties to his friend, who was truly an anchor, or ball and chain. That was no surprise to me, that this occurred in the end.The plot has a few morals to the story: One, which is always try to better yourself as a person. Two, which is treat others as you wish to be treated; do not take advantage of others' good nature. Three, be responsible for your actions and decisions. Four, do not be afraid to experiment, providing that others do not get hurt emotionally or physically.Overall, there was little or no forward movement in the plot, but simply a series of life-lessons.

Can you make a movie out of On the Road?
Like many young men, Kerouac’s novel made a great impression on me when I first read it. When I heard Walter Salles, the director of The Motorcycle Diaries, was making it into a film, I was skeptical, but felt it was in safe hands. There are some wonderful scenes - Kristen Stewart dancing to “Salt Peanuts”, scenes in the car - but overall I’m left feeling it might have been better to have left the book alone. Can a truly successful film adaptation of On the Road be made?

A decent adaptation of a book that can't be perfectly adapted
Is it the book? No. Is it a watchable movie with some decent performances and an interesting storyline? Yes. I loved the book-but-there isn't any way to adapt it directly. The book is a stream of consciousness narrative filled with verbal descriptive and description s that just can't be translated easily to a visual- there is no way to translate unique descriptive by just showing them. Still-this movie does a decent goof showing the story itself. It isn't perfect, but it's good. There is no way to perfectly adapt the books of the beats, because there is a feel and cadence to the words themselves-the words are every bit as important as the story-they are too integral to the entire work. However I keep defending the movie against the book. Watch the movie with a view independent of the book-or this isn one that you may want to watch before the book if you've not read it.

A Memorable Ride with The 'Beat' Generation.
A wonderful, memorable ride with intellectually enlightened, 20-somethings in post world war II U.S.A. 1949-1950s. The 'Beat' generation. This movie is rife with complex characters you will love or hate but cannot resist watching.Garrett Hedlund dominates this movie with a performance that will leave you breathless, aided by a strong, talented cast of supporting actors, including young British actor, Sam Riley.Worth the watch for its true story value, looking at the life of novelist, and Beat generation founder Jack Kerouac, himself a handsome, tragic character of his time. The definition of 'Beat' as used by this generation, implies something deeper than a musical rhythm. Not a Film for the masses. But watch it for the acting and a little slice of history.

I liked it...
This was a hard story to tell since most folks living today would have a difficult time relating to the many naive free-spirit decisions being made in the movie. More than once I found myself thinking, how can this group be so ignorant (no internet) whenever they did things that were obviously going to have consequences. Although in the end it's about growing up and finding ones own way in the world apart from your own childhood/childlike friends.

Too much history, not enough of the story.
I love the book "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac. I've read it at least eleven times over the years. Unfortunately, this film adds scenes that may have happened in real-life, but that were not in the book. It doesn't matter why Kerouac left out certain things about the sexual nature of the relationship between Dean and Carlo. In the book, he focused on their intellectual and spiritual bond (a bond that somewhat excluded him), but he did never imply that they were lovers. It was wrong to put those things in while leaving out other key scenes such as the Opera House, Sal's time working with Remi as a barracks cop, his hunger-induced hallucination in the Greek diner window, and other parts of the book that did not involve Dean. Also, maybe to attract today's young and scruffy hipsters, they got the hair all wrong. Jack and Neal wore their hair combed and slick, not hanging over their ears, eyes, and collars as in the movie. If it brings young readers to appreciate Kerouac's writing, then that is good. But, as in his own life and career, the focus was misplaced on the reality and not on the fine fiction Kerouac created out of that reality.

Massively disappointing film, if you want a good film about self discovery, watch 'Into the Wild' instead.
I haven't read the book so maybe I am not able to have an opinion. But, I do and the fact is I found this film extremely dissapointing and the story line wanting in every respect. I got what the film was trying to do, it has strong elements of self discovery in it but I found everything flat and I was unmoved and disconnected with all the characters. This experience makes me think that the book may not be a strong piece of literature and that the film did the best it could with weak material. Or, maybe the film did not capture the true essence of the book. The best character is Mary Lou (Kristen Stewart) which I would not have seen myself saying prior to watching the film. I recommend for those who do want to watch a decent and moving film on self discovery to watch 'Into the wild' with Emile Hirsch instead of this. 'Into the wild' is an interesting, exciting and moving film. I appreciate my view is not complimentary but wanted to write this to express my dissapointment on this film.

One you need to watch until the end
Well what can I say about this film. I liked it but I didn't love it. It just didn't capture me by the heart and like afew other people I thought some of the actors were miscast. Garrett Hetlund was good but not great, he's not a character that makes u really care about him. He's not so much going on a journey but just stumbling from and running away from himself and ultimately any responsibilities to anyone and anything. I just didn't connect with him and the only time I did was right at the end of the film when he is all alone. Tom Sturridge, Kirsten Dunst and Kristen Stewart were all very good and for me were the best characters in the film. I loved Mary Lou's dancing scene and for me that gave me more sense of their passion for life than any of the sex scenes in the film. I did feel like it dragged in places, the first 15 minutes seemed the longest of my life but that's because I think, like most of us I've got used to big feature films and aren't used to the slower pace of some indie films anymore. It's not one that you'd watch over and over again but definitely worth watching at least once.

I enjoyed the way it focused so much on the people ...
Although all the events might not necessarily be truthful, it is a true adaptation of the book and a very fast-paced, bizarre sort of film. I enjoyed the way it focused so much on the people and how they brought things upon themselves - just like in the novel. I thought the actors were well cast too. Very enjoyable.

Pure dross
Boredom punctuated by occasional revulsion; one of the worst films I've ever seen. A huge let-down versus the book.

A thought provoking story of modern American culture
I rarely follow the critics views on movies and prefer other buyers assessments and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and it really gave me an insight to the era and the author of the book
