Loved it
Have you ever heard of Kino no Tabi ? It's the most similar light novel to Majo series, just replace Kino and Hermes with a Witch on a broom. The story about Elaina a witch who travels from country to a country and it's set in a fantasy medieval world, each chapter has a separate episodic story, it can be comedic, tragedy, dark, sad, fun, or whatever. Some chapters are linked tho and some have really nice twists. You can read any chapters anytime you want since most of them are self contained.Reading the chapters while immersing myself with some fantasy music in the background is recommended. And for Elaina herself, the author describes her with "Elaina is smart and cute, but she's also a witch with a rotten and black-hearted personality despite her polite speech. There's a depraved side to her that loves money, which she sometimes shows during her travels. She is that kind of protagonist.". I like sarcastic, witty and rotten characters who have very entertaining monologues or reactions. She is not a hero or trying to save people which many people complain about. She is just a passerby.

Not what you're expecting
This LN can be thought of as "Grimm's Fairy tails with a cute protagonist." It's a collection of short stories of a witch named Eliana's travels. Many of which have a dark or offbeat overtone. Not what I was expecting but a good read overall.

Fun to read
At first this seemed like it would be light hearted fun but the stories had a depth to them that I hadn’t anticipated. Very enjoyable

Less interesting take on Kino's Journey
This book follows the formula of Kino's Journey, a light novel series that had two good anime adaptations. Like Kino, Elaina is a traveler who wanders from place to place where each place has its quirks and some story unfolds. In Kino's stories the people met had some depth and the stories had emotional weight. I never felt that in this book. It was more like very dry fairy tales without any particular moral or lesson, things just happen then they end.Kino was an interesting character with a back story, continuity, purpose and growth. Elaina just exists, wandering because she wanders with no goal, purpose, nothing. She doesn't seem to care much about the quirks of the places she visits, it's almost like a job she's taken to pay the rent. Except she has no employer, and no one is making her do something she doesn't seem to enjoy.

Witch Kino
A fun traveling character story. Basically Kino Journey but with witches. With very interesting characters, stories, and lands.

Disappointing travelogue
The premise sounded interesting - a wandering witch travels the world. Unfortunately, there is zero character development for the witch Elaina. We're halfway through the book before we get a chapter about her which gives us some history but not much character or motivation. You're almost finished before we find out that she's wandering because she read a book about a wandering witch when she was little and decided that that is what she wanted to be. Those morsels and the fact that she's cute are about all that we learn about her. There is a character called Muscleman who appears in a couple of chapters who seems to have more character development than Elaina.I'm not sure why it is important that she's a witch. The book could have been called "wandering plowboy" for the amount of magic that she uses. She flies between countries on a broom, but it's not important to the story. Despite the fact that she is supposedly a powerful and skilled magic user, she only ever uses magic to fix little things that get broken and to fly. The countries Elaina visits seem to be independent cities rather than broad kingdoms, so she doesn't really even need a magic broom to be able to visit them all as a narrative device. Each chapter is a story from a different country that Elaina visits. I assume that they are in chronological order, but you can't be certain, and it isn't important. These are supposed to be strange stories about strange countries, and I suppose that you could call the countries a bit strange, but there is just too little time on each one to really develop much feeling of strangeness. Elaina is almost always a mere observer of these unusual places and events, making everything less personal or relatable to the reader. Perhaps for readers who haven't had much exposure to reading of different fictional worlds these will seem novel, but I was left with a feeling of "meh."Several of the stories are not well developed nor wrapped up at the end of the chapter. I get the feeling that some of these are supposed to make the reader think deep thoughts, but instead they just feel like a story is ending in the middle or that Elaina just doesn't care about people. "Poor Phyllis looked miserable, her eyes dead and black. Would she commit suicide? Hmm, I don't know. Off to the next country, I guess! Whee!"

Couldn't make myself finish
This is a light novel that kept coming up in the "customers also purchased" recommendations on my Kindle. Before starting a new series I'll check reviews. I purposefully look at both low and high reviews, and the numbers of each.In this case, I saw a few references to Kino's Journey. I have an anime of that, which I liked it well enough (even though I found it overall to be depressing), so I figured this would be a slightly more upbeat twist on a similar premise.I only made it 1/3 of the way through.None of the sections was long enough to provide any interest, color, or depth to the small countries Elaina visited. She was clear about how bored she was and how boring each country was, so why would a reader be interested? Elaina herself seemed flat to me as well as she tries to act cutesy, and competent.Frankly, I'm boggled by the number of high reviews. Some of the other reviews mention that it's only the later chapters where it starts to take off, but I can't see myself slogging through 3/4's of a book or more to get to "good" parts. In a world with increasing amounts of choice for entertainment, if something doesn't catch you, you can easily move on to something better. In this case, I had paused for dinner, and when I picked up my Kindle afterwards, it was one of the very few where I mentally equated reading further to tasks that I try to avoid at work. So, I've removed it from my device, and started something else.

It's a lovely book, but it came damaged
I love The Journey of Elaina. Being a big fan of the anime series and the light novels, I was eager to get a pyshical copy. Unfortunately, the book came with stratches and damaged corners. It's not so bad - I don't think it's something most people would notice. But if you want to buy the book for collection purposes, I would recommend you to get it from a place where it's better taken of.

IT'S NOT ABOUT THE DESTINATION...
What's your favourite story? Does it have a hero who slays dragon and saves a princess? Or a child of prophecy destined for greatness? Well My favourite story is a little different. It's the tale of a witch who travels the world, seeking nothing in particular.she's free to wander wherever the wind takes her. Now the witch who starts the story...who could she be?

A truly refreshing and unique light novel
The Journey of Elaina is very different from many other light novels that I've read, in a good way. For starters, a female lead! Our protagonist, Elaina is a witch traveling through kingdoms and towns, and we only have a glimpse of what her journey is like. She doesn't try to solve every problem along her journey, in fact, she's just merely a bystander in some. Each chapter is dedicated to a short story, many have no relation to one another, and they are not even presented in a linear timeline. Some are fun, some are dark, and most of them are very bizarre. It feels like I'm reading a fairy tale instead of a light novel, but that's why I love it so much. It's less about Elaina, but more about the world around her.I do have a few complaints, however. Due to the chapters have no correlation with one and another, the transition between them are sometimes jarring. There were a few times where I was still trying to digest the previous story, but suddenly I'm thrown into the next. I do suggest taking a break between each chapter, especially the darker ones for your brains to consume the story.Other than that, the illustrations are cute, the book quality is great when it arrived, and translation seems to be good (I don't know Japanese so I can't comment on it).Whether you read a lot of light novels, some, just a few, or not even one, I think there's something for everyone here. However, if you want OP protagonist with a harem story, you will definitely be disappointed.
