Yes , the sounds quality it’s better on optical and hdmi compared with the Bluetooth.

Do i need a head unit to power the speakers

You need whatever you want to listen to for an input signal. The sound Bar has it's own amp and has 3mm, Optical, HDMI and Bluetooth inputs. The surround speakers are wired to a remote unit that receives the signal from the sound bar and powers the speakers.

Do I need to charge the speakers if they’re wireless?

No, the rear speakers aren’t wireless. They are wired to a rear receiver, that receives a wireless signal from the subwoofer which is receives a wireless signal from the sound bar which sits in front and next to the TV. None of the components are rechargeable and have to be plugged into 110v a/c outlets. The only advantage to this system is that no wires have to be ran from a center component and across the room either on the floor, up through a crawl space or down from the ceiling like older surround systems. No it’s not total wireless, beats having to get in the attic or in the crawl space and drilling wholes.
