How does this fit into a sliding glass door. I use my sliding glass door like a front door. Can we lock / unlock this from the outside?

No. This lock is designed to attach to the inside edge of the sliding portion of the door. It is not designed to attach to the facia of the door.

Need for dementia brother, Is it double sided deadbolt?

No. It goes in the sliding glass door track. It would be quite difficult for a dementia patient to figure out how to use it even if it is not locked with the key. The bolt only goes down when you pull the lever below the lock and visa-versa. It will lock down the door even without using the key. The key is only if you want to be sure the lever cannot be pulled down. The only time I feel a need to lock the deadbolt is if I will be out of town.

It is used on the outside of a patio door that is under cover not exposed to direct moisture. It is not rust resistant.
