Audition Psych 101: A Refreshing Approach to the Dreaded Process

This book is a godsend. I teach high school theatre and have used so much from this book in class. Grateful to Mr. Kostroff for writing this.

Michael Kostroff nails the audition conundrum: How do you care enough to invest in the work but not so much that you spiral into anxiety and self-doubt? Then he handily turns the whole process on its head and offers some of the best advice I've ever had in 30+ years in this business: the stats say you're not going to effin' get the job anyway, so why not do the work for yourself?That's not the whole book, by a long shot. It's filled with excellent advice from a man who's in those rooms all the time, too.BTW, if you can ever take one of his classes, do it. He's even better in person!

This isn’t a generic audition technique book, and certainly not a book on acting itself. Rather, it’s a book about the psychological minefield professional actors face on a daily basis. While it may be informative for non-professional actors as well, it really is written for those of us in the trenches of the industry. A no-BS, honest, translucent and perhaps even transformative approach to navigating the audition process, the “grind”, and your own sanity. The author has a clear, casual, often funny and entirely readable voice as well, which makes the book a quick, fun and undaunting read. I can’t reccomend it highly enough. Enjoy!

Michael's candid, detailed, and often hilarious breakdown of the audition process is a must read for actors at all levels. You'll get so many helpful tips and tools to navigate the often dreaded yet mandatory system to book work. Whatever your background in training, (I've studied over the years with several amazing teachers with vastly different approaches FYI) you'll find something in here that will change your perspective and give you a healthier and more sane approach to auditions and life in general. Highest recommendation!

Kostroff writes an honest how to book on dealing with auditioning. There are no formulae, no magic words, and no bs. It is straight from the heart and easy to understand.

Its just necessary for anyone even thinking about auditioning for a acting role to update their thinking with the ideas that Michael teaches so effectively. Thank you!

If you are, or wanna be an actor but the audition process scares you this is a must read. It’s not an acting book, but is more a psychology book that helps you take a more reasoned and logical approach to auditioning.

An essential, practical, and grounded guide to auditioning, with Mr. Kostroff's unique, fun style. If you haven't been able to take his famous "Audition 101" workshop, this is a great summary of the essentials from it.

This is a terrific book. After reading it I started relaxing much more in my auditions .. and having much more fun at the same time. My booking rate has tripled since. For the cost of a paperback, you’ve got little to lose and everything to gain. Buy it!!

nicely written and excellent ideas for any creative person. I sing and perform for a living (not an actress) but the ideas easily cross over. I’m going to read this again to ingrain the suggestions.
