A cautious recommendation
Over the last seven years I've been using the tiny, Spyderco Bug penknife to open packages. I thought this product might offer an alternative and, with its short, rounded blade might be less likely to damage the contents of the box - not that this had ever happened with a penknife. My impression, so far, is that it isn't as effective as my penknife was. It particularly struggled with the packing tape, popular with Amazon, which is reinforced with thread. At this point, I had largely reverted to using a penknife. A few days later, and for the very first time, I managed to stab myself in my left thumb while opening a box with my penknife. This resulted in a re-evaluation of the virtues of the rounded blade on this box cutter. It was a case of weighing up ease of use against having two opposable thumbs. In summary, I think it has a certain virtue if safety is your main priority, but I think there are more effective tools for opening boxes. Update: I now have an Olfa ARSK-10 box cutter. It is more versatile as it has a short, not particularly sharp, blade for opening packing tape, and a concealed blade to deal with plastic wrap, plastic straps etc. The concealed blade is also replaceable, which is useful but may be of concern in households with young children. But, for me, it's the best solution so far.

perfect for opening packages.

It’s totally safe and does the job. My grandchildren can easily open boxes with it.

The opener itself is fine and well made, but when compared to the serrated edge version of this opener, the smooth one does not cut through tape as easily. The only use I see for this is if you don't want to cut yourself at all, then this one is safer. The serrated edge version is a little bit sharper and can still cut you if you're not careful.

I like the size of this but one received had no edge on it to cut anything. Including butter. Either try one to see if it has an edge or not and send aback if not blade.

The yellow ones are great, so I figured the stubby blue one would be a little safer - turns out the blue one is *not serrated* and it's basically useless (at least on amazon box paper tape - might be a little better on plastic tape but I doubt it.)
