Q: not sure about weight. Would 3 panels on a 5/8-inch rod be too heavy?

Absolutely not. They are fairly light weight. I have 2 long panels on a 5/8 and could have easily done 4. They even block out Arizona early morning summer sun!

Q: Can someone who has purchased the “birds on sage” please tell me how well they block out light? Thanks.

I took a picture to attach but I don't know if I can do this because I don't know how to attach. Anyways, just I took the picture at night, from the outside. I have two large windows side by side to a small laundry room. I actually have three large windows in this room, plus a windowed door, so it gets very bright during the day and hurts my eyes. I ordered one set of the green sage birds for one window and was surprised how much less light came in during the day. So I ordered another set for the window right next to my sage green birds. I wish I could show you see the difference. With the laundry room light behind him, I could not see the shadow of my husband's arms on the Versailtex side, but I could totally see the outline through the Sun Smart Odette Foam Back Thermal Window Panel. Before I asked my husband position himself in the middle of the curtain, I could totally see him make monster fingers though the Sun Smart Odette Foam Back Thermal Window Panel. I was surprised by the difference and so was he. I can see there's a light on, but it's like a 4 watt bulb lighting up room.
