Is the smooth side shiny ?

Yes. It’s shinny but the other side is matte and you can’t tell the difference in a picture.

Is this translucent? Can you backlight through it?

Though fairly dense a flash or strobes placed behind will help bring the background exposure up to white. Did this in a product shoot.
