Great NYC map of streets and metro
I've used Steetwise maps for several places and always have had great experiences. Pros: folds to brochure size, and laminated so it can go in/out of a backpack or purse throughout the trip without tearing. Cons: this is only for Manhattan and not helpful if you want to explore any of the other burroughs. TIPS: metro: Get unlimited pass for the number of days you will use metro in NYC to save $. You will only need to use the metro pass to get IN to the station, not out. Be careful, if you have to exit the station because you went into the right side, you have to wait about 20 minutes to re-enter. If the street sign doesn't say 'uptown' or 'downtown' then you can probably access both directions through that entry point. Learn what the "end of line" station is for the direction you are going so you get on the metro train going in the right direction. I didn't find the people working at the station particular pleasant, but they did help me when I asked questions. TIP: use the compass on your smart phone to ensure you are walking/driving in the right direction. There is a symbol which shows which direction is north on the map. Your smart phone will not work inside the metro station. TIP: Some lines have an 'express' train which means that they don't stop at every station. You will see them marked on the map in a diamond shape. Regular trains are marked in a circle shape. Also some of the trains don't run nights/weekends. So look at the signs while you are waiting in case you are waiting for a train that won't be coming.

BIG But Very Useful
The Streetwise Manhattan Map is BIG- it is 8-1/2" tall and folds out to a whopping 19-1/4" long. That being said, the size actually makes it much more useful than smaller maps that cannot capture details, or even be read at all. I carry a "messenger" bag, almost always when I'm popping about the City anyway- so the size isn't really a concern for me.I truth, I find various NYC transit apps to be as useful, and far more easily accessible on the fly. BUT I tend to sort my routing ahead of actually leaving to go out. The map or app would come in handy for me actually on the train only if there's a train or transit problem. BUT you'll stand out like a tourist if you're waving this thing about in public- and somebody could get hurt! It's THAT big!Seriously tho- Using an app on the fly, you'll look like everyone else on the train absorbed in their phone. Plus most subway cars have transit maps on the wall... An app will load the transit map into your phone and you can access the map itself even without internet or mobile connection- the updates, alerts etc you'll need connectivity for. I actually found that simply asking brought not only nice interactions with folks, but also that people are generally very helpful!Bottom Line:This map is but one quite useful tool among others. The visuals alone help tremendously in getting to know train routes, street crossings, and the general lay of the land.Streetwise Manhattan is totally worth the couple bucks- but get the apps, too.

Good, complete map of the island
Good map, complete, with lots of marked sites you'll probably want to visit, and all streets represented. Well laid out. Text is slightly too small to read and/or crunched in some portions. Subway labeling is probably fine once I figure it out a bit better. Wish it included train route to La Guardia--such an obvious need, right?-- but you can get that route map and info on any phone app. But then, you can get this whole deal on apps if you choose to go that route--I like paper sometimes. Small, easy to tuck away, well sealed. If your eyes are eagle-like, this thing is perfect. For those of us with a little poorer near-vision, takes some squinting and fairly bright light. I can imagine needing to use my app for some of its functions at times, depending on the hour, setting, available light, etc. But I wouldn't visit NYC without something like this. Plan to supplement this one with apps and also a larger-text, less detailed map that comes with those 10 Best...miniguides. And if all else fails, I'll ask Siri.

Nice laminated map, needs better neighborhood markings
I love thee Streetwise maps, but the older I get the bigger I wish they were. Can we please come out with a version for old eyes? (Or sell them with a magnifying glass!) Great map, nice to have something so rugged. I've lived near Manhattan all of my life and I've been hanging out alone there since I was 11 years old, but it's still nice to have a map of it in my pocket. Nice to find the exact location of a park, for example.I took a star away because the neighborhoods just aren't marked well enough. Areas like Chelsea or the E. Village should be more clearly marked. It was nice to see the relatively new Highline on the map, but I think a blow-up box of some of these places would be nice, too.Overall, a good map, but I think there is room for a better one.

EXACTLY what we needed!
We used this map during our 5 day trip and it was irreplaceable! Even in our digital age, it was so nice to have an actual map. It's not huge which is nice and the lamination is amazing. I accidentally spilled half of my water bottle in my bag and this map got wet. The lamination started to curl up along one edge but I'm going to tape it and it will be fine. Other than that, it withstood very harsh treatment perfectly. And, to be perfectly honest, it was sitting in the water for probably 30 minutes before I realized what had happened so I wouldn't expect ANYTHING to be that water proof.I expected either a flimsy map or a bulky thing but it was neither. It's just the perfect size to slip into my purse and even unfolded, yes it looks like a map, but it's not huge.I highly recommend this and am so glad we had it for our trip. Well worth the money!
