I hate cooking for just me... Especially in summer
.,These recipes keep the heat in my apartment down. Yeah, some are how to boil an egg simple, but then there is peach carpese salad to offset it.

For what it is, it's good
So you're away from home for the first time and fending for yourself, and there's not a lot of disposable income. How do you feed yourself? Hu offers a number of answers to that question including scoping out events on campus where food is being served, and taking home any food you can fit in your purse or pockets when you dine out.But if you're going to cook for yourself, there's a craft to cooking for one (or more usually two because many of the recipes make two servings) that Hu lays out neatly and concisely. She has aimed the cookbook for the real amateur who probably hasn't done a lot of kitchen duty, but she never goes for the low-hanging fruit; this isn't about buying a bag of Doritos, dumping a can of chili on it and melting Velveeta over it and calling it nachos. This really is about making more wholesome, nutritious meals on a budget. The problem that I saw was that she calls for things like half an avocado, half a russet potato, half an apple, etc. Now if you know anything much about food, you know those things don't age well, and even keeping the other halves overnight in the fridge is likely to produce less than appetizing results that might lead to food waste. But I don't recall her mentioning that, or how to prevent oxidation, or even stressing that making a double recipe of something might be the best bet for keeping food costs down. But that's really the only fault I can find. Overall this book is likely to be more useful than not to college kids. It's got loads of good, basic information on utensils, methods and other things you really should know if you're going to cook for yourself on a shoestring.

She loved it!
I bought this as a gift for my friend; mainly because there is a variety of recipes, they look super fun and creative, and yeah I thought it would be useful.

Accomplished what she set out to do.
Cooking is my hobby and got more from this book than I was expecting. Will be using a few of the recipes, especially the frozen bananas.

Not for dorm living
Recipes require equipment or appliances not allowed in dorm living. Only a couple recipes usable and not typical college age food.

Great book of quick, simple recipes. Needs a section on basic nutrition.
A very good book with simple recipes for a college student, that don't require a lot of time, hard-to-get ingredients, or expensive kitchen appliances. This would be very useful for any student who likes or wants to cook while away in college. The main caveat is this book's usefulness will be heavily dependent on the facilities available to the student. Some colleges don't allow any appliances in the dorms, or may only allow them in specified common areas. The book is well organized, starting with sections on how to set up the college kitchen, complete with some simple kitchen utensils and appliances they'll need, tips on how to stretch a cooking budget, cooking terms, etc. The recipes are nice, with a good selection of various kinds from breakfast to dinner to desserts. Everything looks quite tasty, and most don't take too long to prepare, although there are a few that can take 30 minutes or more (save those for weekends). As such, I think this is useful not only to a college student, but anyone who doesn't have a lot of time, has limited cooking facilities, or doesn't need to cook for more than one or two people. The one thing I think this book needs is a brief discussion of nutrition. There's one on "brain fuel" (page 7), and one on "recovery hacks" (page 9), but no discussion on nutrition while in college. For a student that's not already attentive to nutrition and calorie intake it would be good to have these reminders. On a related note, your student should be mindful of the nutrition information in each recipe. Some of them are quite high in calories.
