Synology 1 Bay NAS DiskStation DS120j (Diskless)

Good for personal use

This review was written after using the NAS DS120j for over 1.5 years. Currently, I am only using a single bay with 8 TB HDDs. However, the NAS is extremely slow to respond and I only get a copy speed of about 2.5 Mbps. When attempting to use it as a cloud and access DS Gallery, it is also very slow and does not even load thumbnails. While the build quality is good, I do not recommend buying this product. Additionally, I have tried using it on four different networks and with different ISPs,etwork speed. so it is not an issue with my network speed.

This packs more of a punch than I expected. I bought a DS120j as a Hyper Backup destination for my DS720p, and also to serve as a test server for new updates and experiment in general. It only has an ARM processor and 512MB of memory so I didn’t expect much but it does well under the load. I installed DSM 7 on here first expecting it to slow it down and it does very well. This would be a great starter NAS for someone. You get most of the features of other models, and your files are remotely accessible. If you don’t have intense transcoding needs this could serve as a media server too (haven’t tested this explicitly, but I’ve done this on lesser powered NASes). Only downside is it’s a single bay, so you’d likely want an external drive to back up important files (or an online destination) if this is all you have. Losing data is *very* painful, redundancy is worth the money. I’d recommend getting an NAS drive for your DS120j since it’s designed for the load and use case, but it is more expensive. For the backup, a standard desktop backup will do since it doesn’t experience as much of a load. For intermediate users like myself, it’s good to test out things and it’s a good additional backup. (My DS720p can add more bays via eSATA but this is cheaper given my needs.)

Este es mi segundo NAS, y lo recomiendo totalmente por la facilidad para administrarlo, y operarlo. Se siguen las instrucciones en línea y en menos de 15 minutos está funcionando. Lo único que no me gusta del sistema operativo es su administrador de archivos, que podría ser más eficiente y dar más detalles de los archivos, sobre todo porque este NAS está optimizado como servidor de media (fotos, video y música). La administración más avanzada sí requiere tiempo para aprenderla, pero lo básico es muy sencillo.
