whats the difference between the "long life" coolant and this "super coolant"?

Subaru Long Life coolant is used on older, higher mileage vehicles (pre-2000’s typically) and Super Coolant is used in just about any Subaru post-2008.

How is this different from regular, old Prestone ethyl glycol ? Why does it cost three times as much? Just because it's blue ?

My 2008 Subaru Outback blew a head gasket last month. It cost me $3100 to have the dealer fix it. Last time I changed the coolant I used Subaru brand coolant. I don’t know if it’s chemically different than any other coolant? The dealership charged me $28.84 times 2, plus $4.94 for cooling system conditioner. I’m pretty ticked that this happened. This is my 6th Subaru and I’ve never had a bad head gasket.

can you top off with alittle water ?

You absolutely can, and typically SHOULD top off with distilled or DI water once the vehicle has a few thousand miles on it (enough time to be sure all the air is out of the cooling system). It's normal to lose water from the mix over time, but the exact amount will depend on your specific driving conditions. The only time I would top off with fresh coolant would be if I noticed a sudden drop in level or some other sign of leaking antifreeze.

I have a 2016 crosstrek, do I just top off?
