Can I use rigid conduit or black iron pipe? I assume it is just standard pipe thread.

Black iron is arguably the best. Galvanized iron pipe is prone to slipping because the zinc is soft enough to act as a bit of a lubricant between the edge bite of the dogs on the sliding part and the iron of the actual pipe. When you find yourself fighting slippage when clamping down, that’s pretty much what’s going on.

Question 2

Anyone tried using these on top of a panel (upside down)? Seems like the feet might make it difficult, no?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it would be difficult. I place my clamps spaced far enough apart for the panel I'm making. I then place a piece of scrap stock across the two clamps that act as rests so the work doesn't doesn't sit against the black pipe. Place the work on the scrap piece and slightly tighten the clamps, then tap down the work onto the scrap and into the clamp. Makes for a nice fit.

Is there a pipe included? buy a longer pipe and increase the opening size of the clamp?Need 14" clamp Thanks 1st time buyer

you must buy your own length of pipe depending on what you want for size. I found something interesting when I did buy some 24" 1/2" dia. pipe, at Depot I saw a display in another dept other than plumbing that had some pipes w/ nice coating that was silver and smooth for another purpose, I compared that price w/ plumbing and it was cheeper and nicer, wish I could remember the display, or dept?

Someone compared the strength of this clamp using black iron pipe (e.g. 24") compared with a 24" Medium-Duty Bessey clamps? which is better?

I've never used the Bessey clamps, but in my experience,the combination of this clamp set, in conjunction with black pipe, has been sturdy enough for every shop task I've attempted with them.  one advantage I've found is that with common pipe nipples and connectors the clamp set can be shortened or extended from just a few inches to 8 (or more) feet and provide sufficient clamping pressure for all of my shop glue-ups
