It is not thick at all. The thickness measurement must be for the bolster sides, because the center part is paper-thin.

The dimensions in the picture are the interior dimensions.

it is very shallow. bed goes downward like an inch or two. very good for short legged dogs or those who have trouble climbing into bolster style beds. this is not a plush, luxurious bed. good for a crate or back-up bed.
