For those on MA courses and above, it will help you to demonstrate your self awareness - inner thought processes about why you chose certain approaches and techniques in your writing - to your supervisors and marking tutors.Many guides on MA courses and above will have chapters on these issues but it is really useful having a small, easy to read book just focusing on how to make logical arguments and avoid common pitfalls in writing.It is easy to read, with a chatty non-threatening style and also a quick reference guide to various types of classic approaches to academic writing.Highly recommended indeed and indispensable in my view.

欧米の大学の新入生に向けて書かれた、期末レポート、卒論を執筆するための指南書です。学術論文の基礎を扱っているので、実際には学部生だけでなく、修士、博士の学生の指導にも使われています。論文が「議論するためのツール」であることを、日本の大学ではまず教えていないのではないでしょうか。日本の大学で議論の仕方を習わなかった私は、海外の大学院で本書に出会って、本当に「目から鱗」でした。本書で扱っている議論の組み立てが使われていない限り、欧米では学術論文として及第点をもらえないのです。日本人の社会科学系学者が国際的に活躍できていないのは（＝英語論文の発表が少ないのは）、まさにこれが原因でしょう。ネイティブの学生を対象にしているので、くだけた表現が多く、それゆえにかえってノン・ネイティブの我々には読みにくいのが難点です。しかし、英語論文を読む必要のある大学院生は、先にこの本の要点をおさえておくと、格段に読みやすくなるので、がんばって本書に取り組んでほしいです。
