Patriot PE2 Electric Fence Energizer, 0.10 Joule (Original Version)

This has been a great charger, we've bought several and have not been disappointed. I can't speak for the other reviews but we have received the correct order everytime and they have worked perfectly. This 8/2 charge is much less than some of the stronger chargers they have. I think this one would be ideal for chickens or rabbits, not dogs or livestock. We have also purchased their stronger chargers and prefer them. (The 40/10 I believe) We use them for our goats, pigs, and dogs. I've tested the fence bare footed to truly see how animals would fair with it. It works let's just say that. Lol I wouldn't recommend doing this total disclousure. 😂 The electricity pulses, it isn't a constant stream of electricity which is perfect. Lowes has metal slotted rods you can use for the grounding rod and we just bought insulated copper wiring to connect the fence to charger and charger to ground. If the fence starts to lose it's charge I would check for oxidation of your wiring if you use copper wiring like us. A clean cut and new wiring exposed to the fence and ground fixed this issue for us and this time we wrapped the wire attached to the fence with electrical tape to insulate it and help prevent oxidation. It didn't oxidize for many many months so you by no means have to have the tape, just be mindful of this if it starts to lose charge. These energizers are NOT meant to be in the weather so you'll need to make a covering for them. We merely screwed a small plastic tote to a 2X4 and garden stake then hung the energizer inside of it. Please don't believe every bad review on fence energizers as more often than not it's the error of the person not the product. Would recommend. 👍

This was a cat saver... we have 14 rescue cats and a bunch of stray cats that would jump the fence and look for trouble with our cats. I used this to install a single stand of electric rope, this keeps my cats inside and the stray cats outside! I Touched it to test the strength before any of my cats touched it. It definitely gives a nice kick, but I don't even switch it off to clear branches along the fence or readjust the line. Definitely enough power for pets, small durable and compact. Easy to install and definitely worth the money! Snails are the worst nuisance with the electric fence, they slide between the line and fence post and will continue to shock until you remove them.

I have a 70' muscadine vine that is a real producer. Last year just before the harvest I lost every berry to the deer. This year I installed a fence, used this item, and had a bumper crop of muscadines. All one has to do is to run a wire around the perimeter and attach it to the unit. A second wire is fastened to a ground rod and the poles are clearly marked as to which is the wire and which is the ground...a snap! I suspect the unit is weather resistant, but just for added protection I enclosed the unit in a clear plastic box to protect it from rain. For simple projects such as I have described, I recommend this unit. TMc

I was using a much stronger fence charger but it had my blue heeler terrified of going outside (dog door) when he could hear the fence charger on. The dog is super smart but my old charger had such a strong shock, he would wet himself if he touched the hot wire, then would refuse to go outside again as long as he could hear the charger on. I decided a much lower powered charger would be sufficient to keep him attempting to dig under the fence, so I purchased this one. This one makes no sound that the dogs or I can hear. We've had this charger running for over a week and he's yet to touch the hotwire. My pugs have both touched it and they just acted uncomfortable and moved away, they didn't yelp out like they did with the other one. I am using the charger to electrify 65' of poly-wire along the bottom of a fence line and also to surround my container garden that's about 24' x 6' with 3 strands of poly-wire. Our barn cat is awful about killing plants in pots, but he's yet to set foot in my container garden area, (have cameras on everything), so I'm guessing he knows from prior experience with horse fencing to stay away from electric fence. We are using a 6' copper ground rod. I give it 4 out of 5 stars, because it's not weather proof. To make it more weatherproof, I purchased a very small clear container put charger inside of it, drilled a hole in the back of the container and hung both the charger with the container over it, on a screw, screwed into some privacy fencing. The container should sufficiently protect the charger. Update 3/2025- Charger is still working great.

Very easy to set up and has seemed to be more durable than other brands, I have used. I have some curious dogs and like to try to get out occasionally, but do not when this is going.

Like a lot of my projects, this one's a bit of a Rube Goldberg. Squirrels on our bird feeders have been my nemesis for a number of years, and I have gone through numerous designs in an attempt to keep the rascals at bay. With this zapper, they've finally met their match! It's been running 7x24 for over 4 months now and hasn't skipped a beat. The squirrels no longer even bother trying, and the birds are happy to enjoy their feast. Obviously this is very much a custom do-it-yourself project, and only applicable to someone with the skills, creativity, and of course time to implement it. (I'm a retired electrical engineer with all three of those traits.) To make it acceptable to my wife, I had to guaranty no birds, squirrels, or her would be harmed, it would still be easy to fill the feeders, it wouldn't look too unsightly, etc. I'm happy to say I achieved all those goals, although it took several iterations to fully outsmart the squirrels who were very persistent in figuring out how to avoid getting zapped. A couple of things I discovered along the way that may be helpful to the next creative genius ... 1) Although the system develops high-voltage (5kv), I did not have any issue with using "standard" electrical wire. Most wire for home use is rated at 600v, but it worked fine in this application. 2) The voltage developed can easily jump an 1/8" air gap (maybe even up to a 1/4"), so be cognizant of where the two conductors are run and exposed. An unintended "short" of this type makes a distinct snap and arc, just like a spark plug, but doesn't seem to harm the energizer unit. Great product! I only hope it continues to run non-stop for many years to come.

Immediately after we planted a hedge of English Laurel, the local deer started treating it as an all-you-can-eat salad bar. The hedge had no chance. The deer would move in every time fresh leaves appeared. We installed an eight-foot tall plastic fence, but the deer just broke through it. So we installed a tougher fence, but the deer found a way under it. Weighted logs at the bottom of the fence had no effect as the deer jumped over. We also tried deer repellent, fishing line, attaching bells to the fence, rags soaked in ammonia, and scattered chunks of Irish Spring soap. A motion-activated water spray helped a bit, but a neighbor saw deer using it as a drinking fountain. At my wit’s end, I started leaving food for the deer a couple of hundred feet from the hedge. The deer equivalent of paying protection money. None of this worked, and thoughts about the deer started to take over my waking hours. If someone asked me how I was doing, I would respond with a long diatribe about my battle with the deer. The deer became my only topic of conversation. In desperation, I ordered a Patriot PE5, expecting this would be just one more failure. But to my amazement, it has worked for the last 12 months. I recommend smearing peanut butter on the wire in a few places.

It arrived broken. Since I didn't find out till after the return period ended, I can't replace it. It rattled so I opened the case and found the transformer had disconnected from the circuit board. Cheap components. I do not recommend.

I think it will last a while and for now it's working. I like that it's lower voltage and 0.1 joules so that it isn't harmfull to small animals. The enclosed flyer shows a pictogramme of a hare, a squirrel and a cat for the pe2 model. If ya got cows, elephants crocs and kangaroos (lol) you'll need a stronger model. This one is fine for my tomato plants. :) BTW, i mounted it inside an enclosed plastic container (my pool alkalinity plus container) that has an opening lid to protect against the elements. Laid it flat in the bottom, screwed the bottom to my vertical support and drilled 2 holes for wires. I can open the lid to access the unit. The power cord runs out the corner of lid (made a little notch for wire). I never stuck my hand on the fence but my cheap volt meter was able to momentarily see 1375volts on the 1000v scale between fence and probe touching the earth. Good enough for me. I'm sure it's 5kv as advertized. Didn't want to try directly on the unit's output to not blow my crappy meter. It is now a month later and this gizmo has saved my tomatoes. Not a single critter stuck around to grab a bite and i have hares, squirrels, ground hogs and possibly others but for the first time none made it through the barrier. On 3 occasions the wire was seemingly stretched from what had to some very unhappy animal that got zinged lol. Nobody died so it seems safe.

worked well, easy to hook up. though I don't remember much info, I youtubed that. I ran strands around the garden to keep the chickens and turkeys and guinea hens from waltzing in and dust bathing. Definately made a dent in the number of the birds marching into the garden. also had less deer waltzing through. Not 100% but definately helped.

Simple effective unit. No switches or set-up! Does not injure small animals, but trains them to stay away from feed, plants, etc.
