This book offers a good foundation to build on. I am glad to have it.
OK, Blues is like Bluegrass music. Not everybody likes it or wants to listen to it all night. I just found this book in my library. I forgot I ordered itand just scanned it while listening to the CD. I am glad I made the purchase. In fact, after my review I am going to research more from this author. It is laid out in a good fashion. Introductions, the body structure ,turnarounds, and endings. It gives several examples to build on. The key wordis to Build on. That is all any book does. You've heard people say "It's for a beginner?" Well, if you are buying a book, chances are you areBeginning a learning experience and looking for information. We are all beginners until we find the Information, process it, Learn to apply it, andthen we are not beginners. This book offers a good foundation to build on. I am glad to have it. I don't get paid for my reviews. I simply state how I feel about my purchases.

Cerebral Blues
This is blues on paper. This is blues that a mathemetician would appreciate. The authors have taken the expression of emotion from impoverished descendents of slaves in the rural South and put it on paper. The groanings of Blind Willie Johnson have been converted to what seems like a mathematical formula.Needless to say, this book is filled with music theory. It doesn't just tell you where to put your fingers on the fretboard. It doesn't just give you a chord and a track to practice it on. This provides the formulas for constructing the chords as well as the methodology for the construction. After studying this book the student will be able to construct his or her own chords almost anywhere on the fretboard and with almost any root. This isn't just guitar playing to impress girls. This is a beginners book for the serious guitar student interested in acquiring the tools to ignite his own creativity and explore the world of music and music theory. It provides the basic foundation for music theory. All of the example tracks on the CD are very basic. The intent is to instruct the reader the basic formulas for constructing the chords thereby enabling the reader to construct his own chords. For example: one section is devoted to turnarounds and endings. The half dozen or more example tracks show variations of the same riff. The intent is for the student to understand the construction of the riff thereby being able to creatively modify or embellish other turnarounds and endings. This is almost like a texbook. It's not for beginners but serious music students.

The Best Blues Guitar Book You'll Ever Buy!
This book is Incredible! I've been playing guitar professionally 35+ years and have a music library that could rival Amazons, and if I had to choose a single Blues Guitar book, this would be it! Larry McCabe covers all of those "Really Cool" Blues Grooves, from the old Monotone Bass note Stompin' Blues (think "Boogie Chillun') to Swinging Jazz Blues (think Brian Setzer Big Band), it's all here. An outstanding variety of Blues Rhythms, the most i've ever seen in one book, combined with a clear, step by step explanation of chord substitution makes this an invaluable book. I was so impressed with this book, I ordered every book written by Larry McCabe, and was equally impressed by those as well!

Almost Great
It is evident that author Larry McCabe put a lot of thought and effort into this work. What is less clear is why he allowed sloppy editing, out of order pages, and typographical errors to mar the finished product which bears his name. Centerstream, a division of Hal Leonard, has had 5 years to correct these problems. They are presumably happy to keep taking your money for a damaged product. Everyone has touched on the problems with the attached CD. It is a mess but you can sort it out with half an hour of your time and some patience, but why should you have to? Some of the examples which are said to be on the CD never made it there, ie. "Blues in the Briar Patch".Other errors are mostly in three categories: factual, typos, and organizational. Some examples. On p. 12 Ami is identified as the V in the key of C. OK most of us can figure out that it is the VImi but what of the kid who can't? Days of confusion. The headline for Appendix Table 2 proclaims in 26 pt. type "Triads on all Roof Tones" ROOF tones? Please. Pages are out of order. As often as not the Preview of chords used in a specific musical example follow the example rather than proceed it.And Larry, those pictures of you taken with the Brownie at the 4th of July picnic in 1973 just don't cut it.You will need to decide for yourself what the above means to you. Maybe I'm just niggling over small stuff. I do know that the lack of attention to the details detracts from an otherwise fine effort.

Wonder why there are so many great reviews for this book
Wonder why there are so many great reviews for this book. The theory component is OK, but the examples are mostly corny, and the accompanying CD tracks are actually dreadful. Sorry, but this one is a bust.
