One Giant Leap for the price of One Small Step
My lego collection on my desk at work consists primarily of Star Wars vehicles, (X Wings, Tie Fighters, AT-ST) etc. The collection got it's Genesis from when we took a family vacation to Legoland and Dad had to have a Lego X-Wing...as a souvenir, of course. Well, the collection has grown to include some more fighters, a MIDI scale star Destroyer and Falcon, and a small Saturn V that I picked up (as a souvenir of course) at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. My son had recently gotten me the newest AT-ST for my desk and as I was perusing amazon for reviews of my kit, I stumbled across this Saturn V.....Wow....1969 pieces, (nice touch), and only $120.00. I had to get it. The model dwarfs everything else on my desk, but I don't care. It is my favorite by miles. This model is just so detailed it's uncanny. Perhaps it's not quite up to Ultimate Collectors Series, but I'm not really sure how they could have crammed any more detail in it. Documentation: The documentation of this product is beautiful. The first two dozen pages are dedicated to a history of the Apollo program plus a profile page of the lego ideas designers who originally envisioned this kit, as well as the lego employees who worked to make it a reality. The remaining 175 pages are dedicated to construction. The instructions are clear and the bags easily identifiable. Build: The build is very interesting. There are some repetitive steps but they are not too bad. One really nice feature of this build is NO STICKERS. To me, stickers are the bane of Lego and anytime I see a sticker sheet, I cringe. No such problems with this kit. The pieces themselves are all printed with whatever custom graphics they need. I like that. Swooshability. At 1 meter tall, the model is not very "swooshable" but I do appreciate that all the stages and their associated rocket engines are adequately scaled and detachable. Both the Lunar Lander and the CM which is displayed on their dedicated "moon" and "ocean" plates are the same scale of the rest of the model. You can even place the Lunar Lander in it's proper place on the vehicle. You can also swap out the command module on the rocket (which is skinned to appear to have the blast shield from the tower jettison rocket in place) with the grey one so that you can actually dock the CM to the LM. The model can be easily modified to represent every aspect of the apollo mission profile, so it serves a great visual when explaining how everything worked together to get people to the moon. Another great feature is the fact that the micro-figure astronauts included are also in scale. So you get an idea of just how massive the actual vehicle was. Nice touch Overall this model is a fantastic value. The build is challenging but not overly so. The model is definitely solid and can be displayed either horizontally or vertically. For any child (or adult) who has a love of the space program, this is a must buy.

I hope that you’re patient.
After completing the NASA Shuttle and the Ferrari Technic kits, I was prepared to enjoy this kit as much as the previous two. I forgot one important thing: rockets are round - LEGO blocks are square. In order to fit round panels onto square blocks, the designers relied on structural pieces that connect using single “pins” (for lack of the correct word). This results in a structure that does not resist to pressure, such as the one needed to affix other parts. The result? Start again, and again as your construct collapses into its individual pieces, 1900+ of them. I must confess that I suffer from moderate Essential Tremor which did not stop me from building and enjoying the two previous kits, but be advised that a steady hand is mandatory for the Saturn V. This kit was not designed with me in mind. Edit January 28: I’ve completed this kit and despite my issues with shaking, I am totally impressed with the finished product. It’s impressive, it’s slick, it’s huge. Five stars. Thanks
