Q: Will the side pocket hold a thermos?

No the side pockets are smaller

mine did however it was kinda hidden the pocket inside

Put ice in ziploc bags. I ce put in bags stayed all day. If ice in no bags and ice does melt dump the water

You could certainly wipe it out, but just letting it air out a bit should work. Generally soft plastics are going to smell when you first open them.

Better than expected and my husband loves it, he did end up taking off the shoulder strap as it tended to twist but overall it is a great bag with great compartments, a perfect sized lunch bag.
