Will this work without disassembling the drive chain, taking the gears and chain off ?

You will need to remove the rear wheel to degrease the chain first then you degrease the cassette this way you are not blowing all the chain grease on the other parts.

Will this damage matte paint?

does this lube the chain? or after i user this, i apply the lube again.

no, this cleans the chain very well, but does not lube it (there is no such product). You'll need to apply lube after cleaning the chain.

I see a couple of reviews warning about potential paint damage. Will the product damage paint?

I've not had that experience, & its made for bicycles so that wouldn't really make much sense. I think its meant for gears & cartridges primarily, I wouldn't be using it to clean the frame. If you're worried about the paint, maybe try it in an inconspicuous place first. I can't imagine it would be an issue with any modern paint, vintage may be another story. Its a truly amazing cleaner, literally the dirt/grease falls off with no scrubbing at all.
