i have it as extender with same ssid and pwd as my base router and using it for guest network. has been working fine. between networks.

We have it setup on the second floor with the main router on the ground floor.

Yes, it can work either hardwired as an access point or wirelessly as an extender of your WiFi network. The key to making a seamless network extension is by using the same wireless password as you use for your existing WiFi. This way devices can roam and you don't need to login again. I would recommend a wireless extender if you receive a good enough signal at your desired location. I find my Netgear signal as the strongest in my house. Your home construction will determine your strength of reception.
