Prince Valiant, Vol. 9: 1953-1954 (PRINCE VALIANT HC) Hardcover – Illustrated, August 28, 2014

I am a longtime fan of Prince Valiant. My Omaha newspaper, which dropped the weekly comic 3 or 4 yrs. ago, and was a stupid move--"Don't mess with a man's comics"-- they didn't listen to, actually did me a favor. I then searched and found the wonderfully reproduced, from original panels, the Prince Valiant from the late 40's into the early 50's in hardbound beautiful large books by Fantagraphics. I have all 9 editions and will buy all they come out with. I'm old school and love to hold a new book, smell the ink, and immerse myself into the stories. That is not hard to do with Hal Foster's artwork. To the art lover who has an interest in jousting knights in the days of King Arthur or Renaissance Fair, these are a must view. Not just read. View, as if in a gallery. I savor each panel as if it were a New York strip steak. If you're not familiar with Foster's genre, do yourself a favor and buy one of these books. I still find it almost unbelievable that he could have put that much detail into a WEEKLY comic strip. His work far surpasses comics and should be in galleries.

The world of newspaper comics is fascinating and today is a good time to read these stories, the fact that Fantagraphics , IDW , Titan , are taking books with collections of these comics allows us to assess how great comic culture was in the 30 's, 40 's and 50's .The book collection of prince Valiant of Fantagraphics is wonderful , I bought several volumes of books that Fantagraphics printed several years ago and this collection surpasses them in many ways. The quality of the reproduction of the comics is fantastic, the additional notes and the presentation of the books is wonderful .Hal Foster is one of the great comic artists of all time and this collection is a tribute that Fantagraphics gives the artist. The quality of the stories and drawings is superlative .Today exists the dispute between the printed and the digital comics, I recommend buying books like this and realize that nothing beats reading printed books. Digital comics has its advantages but not outweigh printed .Do not hesitate to buy this collection, I guarantee you will enjoy to the fullest and not regret the purchase. These books are treasures that will enhance any library,

Continues the great quality of these books. They are obviously a work of love by the crew at Fantagraphics. They have excellent printing and binding and great background Info on the author. I have seen a lot of Prince Valiant reprints over the years (I've looked form them since I was a kid 40 years ago) and these are by far the best (Surpassing the 1970s Nostalgia version and even the earlier Fantagraphics versions). They're well packed and arrived well. Hal Foster is one of the greatest comic illustrators of all time. His stories are compelling, though after almost 20 years he starts to repeat himself.

Every Sunday Morning when I was a small boy, I used to run to get the news paper after church the first place I went was to see was what had happened to my Prince and my King. the fascination hasn`t worn off to find that Prince Valliant was available in hard back reprint book form brought tears to my eyes. To be able to read strips that were printed before I was to able to read was a real joy, HAL FOSTERS art is something that some of todays comic book artist need to study the detail and the perfection along with the colors. not the Sharpie drawn blacked out comics we sometimes find. But to both write and draw is something most of todays comic book artist can`t do. . Worth your hard earned dollars.

When great American comic strips are reprinted in sequential order from the beginning...it is awesome. Getting to read the entire length of the strip from the beginning through to the ending is a great experience. Now publishers are beginning to spend more time publishing these classics. Li'l Abner, Phantom, Peanuts, Dick Tracy, Miss Fury, Mickey Mouse, Rip Kirby, Hagar The Horrible, etc. are all being reprinted. Get these while you can. It'll keep them printing more. Great material in this volume.

One review for all of Hal Fosters work is sufficient. Genius artist and story teller, and as a graphic artist/cartoonist for dozens of years there was no one better. I am aiming to own his complete collection.

any of Foster's work a truly 'artful' expression to read and study. I've followed him for over 60 years and the details in all his work and colors are truly magnificent.

Purchased 4 copies for my various adult sons for Christmas. We all love Prince Valiant, although the older strips are better than the newer ones. Well written, well drawn, great reproductions of the original art in a hardcover format.
