Has anyone traveled through AirTran or Southwest with this carrier? Does it fit ok?

I used this carrier traveling across the country on both AirTran and Southwest. It fits okay. You wouldn't want it any larger though. The end of the carrier that you push furthest under the seat in front of you gets a little bit crunched, because the underside of the seat in front of you slopes down a little bit. There was still room for my pet, however, and she even exceeds this carrier's recommended size. You do have to push and shove a bit to get it under the seat. Since this carrier is soft-sided it allows for a some flexibility when doing that. All in all, it worked out fine and I'm very happy with the carrier.

Alaska Airlines specifies their dimensions as 9.5X12X17. I cannot find any carriers to meet those measurements. Will this one fit?

Alaska Airlines max dimensions are 17x11x9.5 for soft sided carrier, and 17x11x7.5 for hard-sided carriers. The sherpa size small comes in under the soft-sided dimensions Alaska requires. So if you are buying the small, yes it will fit. If you are buying the medium, it is slightly too big and MAYBE you'll get away with it, and the size large is way too big. With Alaska, they appear to be trying to steer larger animals to the checked baggage compartment.

What size dog is this for, Amazon?

I bought this carrier for my cat. He is 17 lbs and fits inside easily and has room to turn around inside. Not sure if that helps since I don't own a dog.

has anyone ever flown southwest airline with this pet carrier?

Yes, I have used the carrier on 2 round trip, coast-to-coast trips. Even though it's larger than their approved carrier, I had no problem fitting it under the seat in front of me.
