A good overview of Jazz for non-Jazz majors.
This is pretty much the standard for the above level college textbook. The CD gives you examples but you will need to use other recordings as well.

Good resource for Jazz lovers
The book has been a good resource for learning the history and styles of jazz. Simple enough to read, nice tidbits. Only drawback is that I've been unable to access the "Online Learning Center" referred to in the book, and the CD set it refers to does not come with the book, and is very expensive to buy separately.

It was a good value for a rental but no longer needed as the book was online after I purchased the book at the start of the semester

Two stars off for limited device support.
Still reading the book but initially I am very disappointed that this is only available on Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, or iPad. I understand the imagery in the book is complemented by these formats, but I would like to be able to make the choice to access the book with my regular Kindle for mobility.

For those who would rent the kindle version: Don't.
This is a warning for anyone who would look to save some money and rent the kindle version. Do not.I needed this book for a simple jazz appreciation course online. I saw the kindle version's lower price and thought i was getting a steal. Unfortunately, 3 weeks into the class I have learned that there is a 4 disc cd set that is supposed to go with it. I now have paid 80 dollars for a full semester rental that lacks a key element for my class. There are no refunds for early returns after 7 days, so I'm screwed. On top of that, my course uses McGraw-Hill connect, an online course feature that requires an access code that comes with the hard copy version. Guess what? That's not included with the kindle version, so if you needed that feature, you're SOL.In conclusion, the kindle version lacks essential parts of the book for my course, and could for yours as well. Be aware of what you are really getting here, and don't make my mistakes, as they are too costly to repeat.
