The Rough Guide to Shanghai Paperback – June 30, 2014

I looked at 5 or 6 different books on Shanghai for a 6 day business trip. I knew that I would be spending all of my time in the city so I wanted a concentrated book that wouldn't waste my time with areas that I wouldn't be traveling to. This book is VERY informative with practical information on cultural information such as tipping, currency, important numbers, taxi services, food customs etc. I purchased several travel guides but this one is the only one that I ended up using. I read it cover to cover in a few hours and highlighted the areas of interest. What I really loved is that the book is very well organized. For instance, when reading about an area- such as the French Concession, it may mention a restaurant that you should visit. It will tell you about that restaurant and then refer you to a page in the restaurant section that gives you detailed information on restaurants. It does this for specific shops, dining, cultural activities. And each area has a very detailed map. I ended up using the maps in the book and got rid of the huge map that I had purchased before my trip. Buy this book- it truly has everything in it you need!

Good way to keep your book handy....and it's pretty relevant too.

Nice easy to read guide book.

This is one of the better guide books with a good balance of text and pictures Following an introduction that includes-what to see,where to go and itineries there are sections on basics of travel,media,sport and culture.The final 2sections of the book deal with a)the city b)listings and c)outside the city.At the end there is a part reviewing history and a small text index (disappointing)There are good maps and and the pictures are large enough to be useful.Fits the back pockel.

The best guide by far for Shanghai. Tells you what you need to know

Excellent - both very entertaining and informative

Really informative for my trip in September 2016. Shanghai is a superb destination for a visit.

Habe mir für einen 1-wöchigen Shanghai-Trip den aktuellen Rough Guide (Ausgabe 2014) und den City Guide von Reise Know how gekauft. Beide erfüllen ihren Zweck. Der Rough Guide gefällt mir gut vom neuen Design her, die Sehenswürdigkeiten wie Oriental Pearl Tower, Old City (unbedingt anschauen, so lange es sie noch gibt!) etc. werden knapp aber auf den Punkt vorgestellt. Die wenigen Fotos im Buch sind von durchweg guter Qualität. Recht umfassend ist der Part Übernachten, Essen und Shopping - das ist praktisch vor Ort. Leider ist der legendäre "Context"-Teil der Reihe auch bei diesem Buch nicht mehr so ausführlich wie früher, was ich persönlich schade finde. Aber scheinbar lassen sich größere Zusammenhänge auch in gedruckter Form nicht mehr so gut verkaufen...
