I bought this slicer and find it awkward to use. the push top does not slide well. i am surprised at the good reviews. am i using it wrong?

No, you are not wrong. The push top does not work easily, especially when you get down to the last few slices.

how is this item powered? is it rechargeable or does it use battery?

No it does not have power or battery. It is a manual spiralizer - you turn the top knob with your hand. Sounds intense but it’s actually a very sharp smooth blade. I spiralized two zucchinis in just a few minutes.
