Can this be installed close to the light rather than in the switch? Say in the ceiling.

yes, you can but how you are going to connect to the switch (The terminals S1 and S2 are meant to be connected to switch). You will basically lose control of the smart switch until unless you are going to operate it from the app all the time. if you follow the said method then you need to keep the rocker switch ON at all times (if someone switches off OFF then the snoff will loose power completely). The workaround for this is to open the switch box disconnect the switch and short both the wires. In this way, the sonoff is powered continuously. please hire a professional electrician if you are not sure about the connection (230V might kill you). if you are techbee then you can connect your own smart switch and control the sonoff through automation. when button is pressed switches the light on and toggles other way.

Whilst it can connect directly to the wifi router, can the sonoff mini r2 connect to a zigbee or rf bridge? (i want to unload all mini r2s from wifi)

I believe it can although I connect mine to my router and mobile devices.

Yes you can, assuming your saying a single gang switch(on/off). You can connect single switch into S1 & S2 connections.

Some Sonoff devices are tricky to pair, you need many attempts (10-15), buy after that no problem with the connection.
