Avoid transmitter/receiver antennas touching metal; stay within range of transmission
Finally got around to installing this receiver/transmitter kit. I had a repair done to the car and the backup camera wasn't working after I got it back. The problem was either a broken video cable or a faulty camera. I saw this kit on Amazon and decided to try it because I was not in the mood to run another video cable to test. The installation was easy. The transmitter connects to the backup camera. The receiver connects to the head unit. Read also the head unit manual to see how to connect the wire for the trigger for automatic switching to the backup camera when the vehicle is put in reverse. The challenge was in testing the kit. I have a hatchback. I placed the transmitter on the inside of the trunk door, just below the bottom middle of the back windscreen, in a cavity and not letting the antenna touch any metal behind the cover hiding the electronics. Placing the receiver behind the head unit results in the receiver getting no signal from the transmitter. I placed the receiver to the right of the head unit (due to space constraints and fortunately mainly plastic in that area) and got a stable, sharp and clean picture from the camera. The signal is wireless so you might get interference at some point from an external source in close proximity to the transmitter/receiver kit. But for the most part you should get a distortion free picture from the transmitter to the receiver. The key points to remember are: 1) do not let the antennas of both the transmitter and receiver touch any metal parts as this will affect the signal transmission 2) do not place the receiver behind the head unit because the head unit, being metal, will block the signal from reaching the receiver and you won't get any picture from the backup camera 3) the receiver does not have to be in direct line of sight of the transmitter but within the operating parameters of the kit I am very pleased with this kit and would recommend it

It works well, just not in my application.
It works well, if you can get a good signal. I mounted this in my hitch receiver and the signal was iffy. Sometimes I'd get a good picture, but then it would lose connection and then come back. This was in a Grand Cherokee and I guess there was just a little too much interference because of being outside the vehicle and being surrounded by the metal hitch receiver. I ended up hard wiring a license plate camera. I figured it wasn't much more work to run the wire once I had the tailgate pulled apart anyway.

nice concept..more problems than it worth
worked erratically for the first week.sometimes perfectly clear ..other times grainy...seems like anything wirelessly controlled interferes with the signal like convivence store alarms and other wireless signals seems to create a problem..put in reverse..start backing out of a spot close to the building "no signal"..10 ft from the building..it seems to catch a slight signal..screen starts to flicker..grainy at best. now it's a steady "no signal"..took the dash apart "again" to make sure the receiver is powered and the transmitter are powered and camera were powered..yup..just not worth the effort..$6 and I can buy a 32ft hardline lay under my truck run a wire 1 time and be done with it..gonna make nice paper weights i'll bet.

Ok results
So, I have a truck that in installed a new-in dash on. With the new in-dash, i had the option of a backup camera, which I thought would be a nice-to-have feature. After a little research, i learned how difficult it is to run a video cable through my truck. It requires taking apart damn near the entire cab, roof, and bed. I thought that, before i take on that amount of work, I would try these wireless options fist. After the initial test outside of the truck, i was optimistic as the range and clarity were pretty good. I thought there would be no issues once installed, so I proceeded. They connected easy enough and I was able to splice into power without an issue. During my test drive, I was really impressed. A few days later, I noticed some static would appear in some locations. i am assuming there was interference as it works perfectly in some places, but consistently bad in others. unfortunately, that list of bad places keeps growing. I would say the picture is clear about 40% of the time, static-filled - 40% of the time, and completely locked up 20% of the time. The one good thing is that it is helping me to decide if i value the back-up camera enough to spend the time and install it right, with a cable.

Good unit
Easy to install, and works well. I installed the transmitter under the trim panel of my rear hatch, and the receiver behind my head unit. Video is on instantly, and is clear with no static.

Too complicated
Was complicated to install ended up running the hard wire attaching it to the power supply and my back up camera worked fine. I was trying to avoid pulling wire thru some pretty tight spots.

Bon cable

Works reasonably well
I'd added a rear camera to my car and did not want the hassle of trying to thread cable from the boot area to the monitor in my centre console. I wasn't too convinced that these would work because of their price, but I get a really good picture on my monitor. The biggest issue I've had with these items is heat. The transmitter in the boot is connected to my reversing lights so it's only on briefly, but my receiver unit was connected to my cigarette lighter socket which was on all the time with the ignition and it did get quite hot. This causes the image to degrade and eventually no image at all. I simply replaced the lighter plug with a switched version so the receiver is now only on when I'm reversing and I get a good clear image. For the money the units do a good job, but they're best only briefly on when in reverse gear.
