Pocket Books Mote in God's Eye

Un altro capolavoro di Niven e Pournelle. Molto consigliato, una bellissima storia di Science Fiction. Molto meglio in ligua originale piuttosto che tradotto.

As páginas são coladas, então muitas palavras ficam expremidas perto da lombada, o que prejudica a leitura. O que tirou mais a nota foi a péssima embalagem para envio internacional. When Niven & Pournelle get together, the stories they create are truly amazing. They have a depth of characterisation and a wealth of background that clearly demonstrates a dedication to the creation of a detailed, well thought out and highly plausible universe in which to place their characters, and enact their stories. There are numerous examples of their collaborative strength to choose from: Fallen Angels, The Legacy of Heorot, Lucifer's Hammer and many others. They have even collaborated and produced other work, Footfall being a fine example, that revolves around a similar theme. The Mote in God's Eye is in a different league, however, and is without doubt the best first contact story I have ever read. We are introduced to a future where the human race, decimated by war, is striving to recover the shattered remains of an empire. Having just fought, and won, a major battle to save a world from destruction following coup d'état by rebellious forces, the newly promoted Captain Rod Blaine is sent home in the battleship MacArthur, along with a prisoner and a survivor, for repairs and rest. In transit however, his ship is tasked to make contact with an intruding spaceship; the first ever known contact with an extraterrestrial species. The story unfolds to reveal a world that is truly alien. Niven & Pournelle don't just create monsters, however. They enfold you in a comfortable friendship with the Moties, whose technologies are as miraculous as their motives are mysterious. You will be introduced to a completely foreign society that will draw you in with it's warmth, and at the same time thrill you with the dangerous undercurrent of fear of the unknown. The Moties present the empire with an unprecedented potential for wealth, and prosperity but hold a secret that could spell the complete extinction of mankind. This is superb, compulsive reading and I can't recommend it highly enough.
