As far as canned cat food goes, Weruva's Paw Lickin' Chicken is probably one of the best around. Yes, there is a lot of gravy, but that's a good thing considering cats should be getting most of their hydration and moisture content from their food. In the wild, cats would be catching their food and eating it raw. Therefore, a raw diet would be the most species appropriate diet and the best for your cat. However, it isn't the most convenient or cost-effective, so I'd say this is the next best thing if you don't want to go raw. What I like about this particular flavor is that there are no veggies or grains. Cats are obligate carnivores and don't need to eat starches like peas, rice, corn, or potatoes. Their bodies are just not biologically equipped to digest these ingredients, so the fewer the better. Sure, cats can do just fine eating these, but it doesn't mean it's "good" for them. Just like not getting cancer from smoking doesn't make smoking good for you. However, while many canned foods claim to be "grain free", they're not "starch free". Fillers like potato starch or pea powder are still used. Dry foods are also pretty bad for cats due to low moisture and high fillers. I don't recommend dry food for cats at all, not ever, even the expensive brands. Lastly, this is the only brand and flavor of canned food I buy. However, I also feed my cat a raw diet that includes turkey and duck for variety. But of all the foods I've ever fed her over the last 7 years, this is a clear favorite. I've never seen her lick a plate so clean! She LOVES Paw Lickin Chicken unlike anything else. It's the only food that has her literally begging for more. Do your cat a favor and at least try it. If you can afford to feed your cat a raw-only diet, and can commit to that, then that's what I'd recommend. But if you would rather do canned out of price or convenience, then this is definitely the one you want. So glad I found it for such a good price on Amazon. I'll be back for more!

This review is really written by my cat Marley, a finicky eater for 11+ years - Meow (Marley calling for this food), Purrrrr (Marley while eating this food). He loves it. It is really nice because I'm making him happy while giving him better quality. I also give it to my other 2 cats, and they love it too - so I go through a lot of it and it's not cheap, but worth it. I put out small amounts at a time because they lick off the gravy first, and from there, the food spoils fairly quickly - the now-unmoisturized chicken dries out fast and becomes straw-like (I would rate it 4-stars for this reason but Marley says 5!). So I give small amounts and they know they have to finish all the chicken before they get more - but there is a little bit of waste. I still have to give dry food and sometimes a cheaper pate can (lasts longer) if I'm going to be gone long and have to set out lots of food. Some reviewers of this food were upset that it has so much moisture (85%), but that is one of the main reasons I buy it - (also grain-free, made to human standards). Cats in nature get most of their moisture from their food. And their natural prey would contain about the same moisture as this food. They really don't drink enough water to get their hydration. And hydration is so important to help kidneys, uti's, etc. The 5.5 oz cans seem to have a higher chicken ratio than the 10 oz. cans, though both say 85% moisture. I also saw a somewhat negative review about the potato starch - it is the 3rd ingredient after chicken and water. The reviewer said the potato starch has been increased by Weruva - I don't know because I've been using this food for less than a year - also don't know if potato starch is beneficial but I'm going to check it out. Lastly, the amount of vomiting among all 3 cats, especially Marley, has decreased drastically since I switched to this. Vomiting can't be healthy or fun for them - they are purging themselves of food they are having trouble digesting. And they get little or no nutrition from the puked-up food. And I get a cleanup and wasted $ on the wasted food. If that is factored in, maybe the price (per digested ounce) is about the same?

I lost 2 cats from kidney disease (most likely caused by melamine-tained cat food in 2007-8). When I got my new fur-baby, I swore it would never happen again. While there are several promising options that provide excellent feline nutrition AND meet mama's exacting standards, the part I hadn't factored in was having a picky cat. Most canned food has a pate-like texture... which she won't touch. There are a few sliced/chunks in gravy options... she licks up the gravy and leaves the rest. Weruva, however, she gobbles right up. Licks the plate clean - even the flavors with peas and other veggies. I'm super impressed with this food - it meets my standards for food safety (grain free; human-grade; no yucky additives for color/odor/flavor; free range; hormone/antibiotic free, etc.) AND the darned cat will actually eat it. A few bonus features for this food: - It's the only canned cat food I've found that doesn't make me gag when I open the can. Looks appetizing, like you've opened a can of progresso or something. - Pleasant to non-existent odor when I open the can, spoon the food onto a plate, etc. My small apartment appreciates this! - If any shreds remain on the plate, doesn't gross me out to wash with the same sponge I use on my own dishes. - The... err.. end results in the litter box are also nearly non-existent as far as odor goes. My small apartment definitely appreciates this! I haven't tried her on any of the fish flavors (I can't stand the smell of fish at all and I'm not a fan of the Menadione that must be added to fish-based cat food), but here's my cat's expert opinion on the flavors she has tried: Paw Lickin' Chicken: Just plain and simple, shredded chicken breast in a light clear gravy. I think this is the one she gets least excited about, so I don't feed it too often. Grandma's Chicken Soup: One of her favorites. This flavor tends to have much more liquid and less meat than the others so I wouldn't use it as a primary food. However, I like to rotate this one regularly and feed it more often in warmer weather to ensure she's getting enough moisture. Also contains peas, carrots, & pumpkin. Funky Chunky: Probably her 2nd favorite. Similar to Grandma's Chicken Soup, but much less broth/gravy and much more meat. This one also has peas, carrots, pumpkin, and the shreds of meat are larger. Nine Liver: Her 3rd favorite, which surprised me. Shredded chicken breast and chicken liver, no veggies. The liver pieces are actually fairly small tidbits, not huge chunks like they look to be in the photos. Green Eggs and Chicken: Shredded chicken breast, peas, spinach, and little bits of egg. She isn't as fond of this one, so I've stopped buying this flavor. Pretty sure it's the egg she doesn't like, as she does like another flavor that contains spinach. Peking Ducken: By far, her favorite. Shredded chicken breast, small tidbits of duck breast, pumpkin. I was quite surprised by how much she loved this flavor -especially since I only bought the first can of Peking Ducken on a whim. (It would be one of the more expensive flavors!) On the Cat Wok: Another favorite. This one has shredded chicken breast and shredded beef, with pumpkin. Steak Frites: Shredded beef, sweet potato, & pumpkin. She prefers "On the Cat Wok" so I think she's not as fond of beef, but she's content to eat this flavor about once a week. I serve Grandma's Chicken Soup, Funky Chunk, 9 Liver, and Peking Ducken in heavy rotation, tossing in the occasional can of On the Cat Wok, Steak Frites, and Paw Lickin' Chicken. If your cat is extremely picky, I suggest trying Paw Lickin' Chicken. If you feed fish, I've heard that Mack & Jack is the kind cats like the most.

I adopted Layla as an older cat (~7yrs), and she had chronic diarrhea and was underweight, but also a finicky eater. My vet prescribed special IBS canned food, which Layla hated with a passion, so in an effort to coax her to eat, I would let her eat cheap gravy food (the only food she kind of liked) along with shredded chicken I would cook. This was either hit or miss with her, and I frequently ended up wasting food because she either flat-out refused to eat it or wouldn't eat all of it. Even with frequent vet visits and medicine, Layla proceeded to get sicker with her IBS, and out of desperation, I ordered the Paw Lickin' Chicken along with some other flavors. Layla absolutely adores it!!!! It looks and smells like human food, and is clearly high quality (it looks exactly like the picture). The other cheaper food would sometimes make me gag at its consistency and the poor quality of the meat, but Weruva is wonderful! It is high in water content, so I know Layla is staying hydrated, and it's also so easy to wash out of the bowl, unlike gravy food or pate. The other thing I've noticed is that Layla doesn't need as much food to stay satiated. She eats about three 3.0 ounce cans a day, and has no problem with grazing on them throughout the day, which she wouldn't do with the other food. Economically speaking, yes, Weruva is a more expensive food ounce for ounce, but the money I save on waste actually makes Weruva cheaper for me. Plus, when you compare the price to the quality of the food you receive, Weruva is a far better purchase than the more popular high-end cat food (which cost the same). However, the most important point is that I now have a very happy cat without IBS symptoms, who is finally gaining weight, and this is priceless to me =).

I only started ordering this food probably summer of 2025 through subscribe and save. My cats really seemed to enjoy the food, the quality seemed good and there was lots of moisture and a decent amount of meat which is great. I only recently, a few months ago, stopped ordering it because one of my cats developed EGC (swollen lips....) a few months after he started eating this particular food. It may just be a coincidence but as a process of elimination (after having received steroid injection...to relieve the swelling..) I'm trying to determine if this particular foods formula (gums, thickeners...) and or the chicken is the culprit of the allergic reaction. I have read posts from other cat owners who have had issues with this particular food and this brand so time will tell. I will say I think this Weruva brand seems to be a great brand OTHER THEN they put fish in most of their foods. I won't buy this particular food again, but not because I don't think it is quality.

my cat is almost 10 years old now and I started thinking more about what I feed her. Admittedly I should have paid more attention to this years ago but believe it or not, until recently, I just thought pet food was pet food. Gizmo had a bladder infection a year or so ago and after learning that kidney disease is a common and deadly disease for cats, I wanted to see if switching foods would help her ward that off so she can live another happy 10 years or more. I did research and read all about how dry food and grains is unhealthy for cats and mainly filled with undigestible ingredients. Grains in the food cause crystals to form in the urine as the cats body tries to process them. Higher protein foods, grain free and with a higher moisture content are what is best. I read all the reviews here and decided to try this paw licking chicken flavor. For starters it doesn't have that gross smell most canned cat foods do. It seems close to human grade to me. From the first try of this Gizmo was hooked. Now she cries for it, rubs around me, sometimes even gets wild if I am ignoring her and jumps up onto the counter to get my attention that she wants to be fed. After buying 2 cases on here, I decided to try some regular store bought canned food. I just thought this may be a bit pricey to maintain and she was going through it like crazy. I tried several different brands from Petco and several from the supermarket. I tried to get as close to this flavor as possible with shredded chicken flavors and none of that pate stuff. Nothing! She will not eat a single other brand now. She cries and cries and if I set down something different she will sniff it and walk away. I tried being stubborn and said, well if you are hungry enough you will eat eventually. Well she won because she actually started to lose weight. It was incredible. This 6lb cat won by starving herself. So I ordered more and she is eating and happy again. If it makes her happy and it's healthier than all the dried grain filled junk I fed her for years then I will continue to buy it

I have tried all varieties of Fancy Feast. Even the high brow Fancy Feast in the pouches. I’ve tried Sheba, Tiki Cat and Science Diet. And my picky 8 year old cat that I recently adopted from a shelter would not eat any of them. She’d eat kibble. But not soft food. She has a history of urine crystals so she really needs soft food. But today I tried WERUVA Paw Lickin’ Chicken and she absolutely LOVED it!!! I tell you I almost cried.

We have purchased this for 5 of our cats after discovering from our sick Kitty most of the regular cat food from supermarkets and pet stores is junk. So began the search for grain free dry and wet food. We already had found out about the health risks of CARAGEENAN to humans and with dismay noticed it in nearly all the premium cat foods. Carageenan is a thickening agent (so is Guar Gum,Xantham gum), none are good for you, but the latter two are way more preferable than Carageenan. It comes from seaweed. In that form its fine. Typically its how us humans process it, that transform it from seaweed into a likely carcinogen (watch out for it for your own grocery shopping and refuse it). I'm no scientist, just google it. Theres loads of high quality cat food in pet stores available now which we'd love to give our cats, we figure they would like variety as much as people rather than the same old everyday, however, going through each high priced wet food (over 80c - $1.50 per can or pouch) looking at the ingredients most yielded carageenan amongst good ingredients. Frustrating. We are not gambling with our cats health anymore with that processed gunk in their stomachs year after year. No way. So, we found this, they all love it, especially if they haven't had it in a while. There is no menedione sodium bisulfate (msb) in it either, which is a man made vitamin supplement, generally regarded as unhealthy. Watch out for Weruva fish variaties though, which according to other reviews apparently have MSB, we only use their chicken at the moment. Pros; Human grade chicken meat NO carageenan NO menedione sodium bisulfate (msb) All our cats like it, some more than others Cons; Potato starch (instead of grains),not particularly healthy but better than grain filler? Sadly the change in diet wasn't enough for our first Kitty, she died of cancer earlier this year, over 11 years old. Years before the illness she was always vomiting, especially wet food. When we switched to grain free (Wellness Core for dry, Weruva chicken for wet) it almost stopped overnight. We think now she was allergic to grains and regret not finding out sooner the useless harmful junk in most cat food. It is also stunning how little vets know that cats do not need grains in food and they can be harmful. Ours even sell and give Science Diet, loaded with poor quality meat and filler. We have spent a lot of time researching for good cat food, primarily without grains,meat by products,modified starch,carageenan & msb and more trash. For those pressed for time,heres some things we have learned and used; THE FOLLOWING CONTAIN NO GRAINS,CARGEENAN & MSB; Wet food; Weruva chicken Wellness wet 3oz varieties POUCHES ONLY (NOT tins which have carageenan) Natural Balance wet 3oz varieties POUCHES ONLY (NOT tins which have carageenan) Dry Food; Wellness Core Fish & Fowl I'd like to try Blue Buffalo Wilderness dry food,states grain free but has oats and rice,aren't they grains? Times are hard and premium cat food is expensive. If you a on a very tight budget and have to buy the supermarket junk try Friskies Chicken shreds,lots of filler rubbish in there but no carageenan and first ingredient after water is chicken (most are by product),also SOME fancy feast varieties,some whiskes. When you can get your cats some Weruva Chicken tins,Wellness pouches,Tikicat tins, the more better food your pet eats the more it'll save you in vet visits down the line. Have any unseasoned scraps of fish or chicken,turkey from your own meals left over, they'll love it and its good for them. If anyone has any other useful suggestions for wet or dry cat food that is grain,carageenan & msb free please let us know through the comments section.
