Q: How thick is the material?

Without measuring the thickness I would guess 1/8 inch or a bit less. Plenty strong and VERY CLEAR. I have six and all work great for their intended purpose.

Q: It says it holds 8.5 x 11 but the width dime soon in the picture and the stats says 8.2 or 8.3; am I going to have to trim the paper?

No, you will not have to trim the paper.

Q: can these be etched/customized with a laser cutter?

If it's good quality acrylic, it should etch well with a laser. I use a laser engraver to etch acrylic all the time and it works well. Cutting should not be a problem either, depending on the power of the laser used.
