The History of Jazz

I first read this book as an Audio book, but ordered a hard copy to keep as a reference. The book seemed to hit all the bases for me, in offering a brief history of Jazz.

Amazing breadth of knowledge. Weaves melody, harmony and rhythm with sociology, history, and the lives of the musicians. Beautifully written, too. Not just an excellent music book, a great book, period.

Great read, excellent writing. I learned a lot about artists I was previously unaware of.If you're curious about the history and development of Jazz this is your place to start.Happy listening, there's a useful list of important recordings in the appendix.

I think the book overall is a good read. My issue with it is that there is a bit of ‘cut and past’ going on. Without the details: i found more than a few statements that contained the same errors as in other sources but have long been proven incorrect. Have fun finding them. It is disappointing to keep seeing the same errors repeated. I have the same problem with his The Jazz Standards. Anyway a good read.
