Runnin' Down a Dream: A Tribute to Tom Petty

Lucinda delivers a gritty soulful version of these Tom Petty classics. If your a fan of either this is a great album for you. It also sounds amazing on vinyl. A must have if your a fan of Lucinda and Tom.

Just getting into Lucinda. First heard her on Reason To Cry. Her voice is unique and bluesy. Don't have to be a Petty fan to really enjoy these songs. Her band is TOP NOCH! These recordings are meant to co-exist with whatever you are doing.

Great versions of petty classics

The content is fabulous; the vinyl production is horrible. I ordered and returned 3 copies before giving up. Someone needs to deal with quality control. I have several hundred LPs but never encountered skipping on new records like this.

4 stars for music, 1 star for packagingThe music is good, bordering on great in places. The tracks that really stand out such as "Another Face In The Crowd" are the ones where Williams makes them her own. When she sticks close to Petty's originals, such as "Wildflowers," they become rather ho-hum. Not bad by any stretch, but not stellar. There is a certain grittiness to the songs that lends itself well to this album. Unfortunately, the gain was set too high for a lot of the vocals and the recording comes across as a bit amateurish.The packaging is awful. The CD comes in a cheap cardboard gatefold sleeve with no liner notes or booklet. The result is a product that comes across as a cheap cash grab. This endeavor really deserves more.

Es como tener a Lucinda con su banda delante de uno, mientras van tocando una selección de canciones de Tom Petty. Sin más. Encima, creo que el proyecto incluye homenajes a otros artistas, que irán saliendo poco a poco. ¿De qué podría uno quejarse?

La pandemia ha fatto anche cose buone, tipo spingere molti musicisti a sperimentare cose nuove, cose che probabilmente non avrebbero mai fatto se non avessero avuto un po' di tempo per loro. Certo, lo stop forzato gli è costato sotto l'aspetto economico, ma li ha visti protagonisti di concerti in streaming o registrazioni casalinghe, dove spesso si sono divertiti a rivedere le proprie canzoni o quelle di altri e ne sono uscite tante belle cose. Lucinda Williams ha addirittura esagerato: ferma a Nashville, dove vive, è entrata in studio e ha inciso la bellezza di sei dischi completi, ognuno a tema. Nomati come "Lu's Jukebox", la Williams ha messo a punto tributi a Dylan, agli Stones, alla musica soul, agli standard della musica americana, un disco a carattere natalizio e, appunto, uno dedicato a Tom Petty. "Runnin' Down a Dream" è il primo a uscire ufficialmente, è il "volume 1", come recita il sottotitolo, e quindi dovremmo aspettarci anche gli altri. Iniziando da Petty, capiamo già subito come girano e gireranno le cose: Lucinda è prodotta dal marito Tom Overby, come sempre, e le canzoni sono tutte incise con la sua band, che produce un suono essenziale, crudo, molto rock, con un sempre più bravo Stuart Mathis alle chitarre e, particolare importante, il tutto è inciso dal vivo, come fosse un concerto in studio. Tutto questo è perfetto per le canzoni di Tom Petty, uno degli ultimi grandi rocker, scomparso troppo presto, che nelle mani del quartetto di Lucinda (lei è solo alla voce) prendono una nuova vita, secche e taglienti, perdendo ovviamente qualcosa nei confronti del "big sound" degli Heartbreakers, ma guadagnandone in immediatezza, con la voce aspra e dolce di Lucinda a fare da collante, fra il pulsare del basso, i fendenti di Mathis e la batteria. I pezzi scelti sono quanto di meglio Tom Petty abbia inciso, secondo me, e quindi si va sul sicuro: tredici brani straordinari come la title track, "I Won't Back Down" o "Wildflowers", tanto per citarne qualcuna. Veri e propri inni rock'n'roll che la Williams piega al suo suono, alla sua visione della musica, al suo sud, strascicato e stradaiolo, restituendoceli vestiti a nuovo, dove è stupido fare paragoni con Tom Petty e la sua band. Questo è un disco della Lucinda Williams di questi ultimi anni, sempre meravigliosa, che interpreta Tom Petty con la sua sensibilità, rispettandone in pieno l'eredità. Grande disco, un tributo di una grande donna a un grande musicista.
