Real Plug and Play. Very silent.
It came from the seller with the disks already installed (2x4TB).Installation is really easy.Very nice APPs. The APP to download the files from commercial cloud providers (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc) is fantastic, as you can make the transfer to your NAS very easily and without any effort.Operation is very silent and temperature of the device is not high at all.Very advisable and also good price.Maybe the 512 MB RAM is a bit short, but for home use is more than enough.

Incompatible WD Red drives
Buyer beware: the enclosure with the Western Digital Red option (at least the 2x2TB but I suspect most WD Red are) comes with WD Red SMR (Shingled magnetic recording) drives. Synology reports these exact model of drives as incompatible and for good reason. The way SMR drives write to disk is different and in use case scenarios where your NAS drive will edit/write a lot of data, you will end up with very poor write performance. For more info search on google "WD Red SMR vs CMR". I cannot recommend these drives for anyone and I am highly disappointed that these Synology enclosures ship with them. Western Digital was actually sued because of these drives. A test performed showed that a zfs raid of WD Red SMR drives would rebuild in about 9-10 days, compared to WD Red CMR drives which would rebuild in 14hrs.I've now returned these and reordered with Seagate Ironwolf drives which are guaranteed to be CMR drives.

Very good, but buyer beware of smaller models
On the surface, this is a pretty great entry model NAS. It will do everything you need if you're after something for your home and don't plan on too much heavy usage. It holds up well streaming 4k movies, but you will notice a performance dip if you do too much while streaming. If you're not overly technical, it can be a bit tricky to set up to back up your files and folders properly, but there are super useful guides on the web that will walk you through how to prevent the two-way sync on folders you don't want all over your network.BUT, the biggest issue by far is that the WD Red version that is less than 12TB comes with SMR drives. WD have been shipping SMR drives out to smaller NAS installations, which aren't good at all for NAS or RAID. They take up to 14 days to resilver, which is far from ideal. In fact, WD are facing a class action law suit for this because it's not shown in the spec sheets... Amazon should make buyers aware of this.If you buy a smaller capacity Synology NAS, avoid the WD Red. Iron Wold doesn't use SMR on smaller sized drives, so consider this option as you will be fuming when you try to replace a drive and it takes 14 days to resilver.WD Red drops the SMR and goes to SMR over 6TB drives i believe, so the 18TB and upwards options are fine for the WD bundles

das mit Abstand schlechteste SW-System, was ich in 40 Jahren erlebt habe!
HW-Installation einfach, alles Andere (Softwaretools) unter aller Sau, langsam, umständlich, redundant und praktisch 0 Benutzerführung und -information. Einfach z. K.!!! Schon bei mittleren Datenmengen überfordert. Was für Digital-Naives...

Bought for Plex
Edit:If you want a NAS for Plex, get a better one than this! Plex will run on this one, but it can be tediously slow (because this NAS doesn't have enough processing power or RAM). My original review is below. I haven't changed my rating, because this is a good NAS, just not so good for Plex!Original Review:This is my first NAS and I bought it solely for use with Plex, so that's what my review is about. I bought the 2 x 10TB Toshiba N300 package.I was in two minds whether to buy this model as when doing research, I kept hearing people say that the lack of RAM (512MB), as well as the fact it's not upgradable, means it's not ideal for Plex use. Based on my experience so far, I would agree with this, however that's not to say Plex won't run. I have been able to install Plex and play my media without any major issues - sometimes it's a bit slow though, and sometimes videos will randomly stop, which is annoying, but most of the time there are no issues (I suspect something else is happening in the background that causes videos to pause - maybe it's the NAS doing something, or maybe it's Plex doing a library scan). Also, bear in mind that I live alone and I am the only one accessing the NAS - if you plan to use it with multiple users (i.e. more than one) accessing Plex at the same time, I imagine it will struggle. However, for me, I thought I may as well take a punt on this model as the price of the enclosure + hard drives was pretty good. If you consider the cost of buying the drives separately, the NAS enclosure itself worked out at about £25, so I thought I may as well buy it as it will be handy to have as a backup (literally) when I upgrade to a more powerful / expensive NAS in the future.I also purchased a Chromecast from Google and paid the £5 one time fee for the Plex iPhone app - I'd highly recommend both as this will allow you to access your content on any TV very easily - I've not experienced any play back issues at all so far.In summary, if you are a single user wanting this for Plex, it's not a bad option. It would be better to buy a more powerful NAS with more (and expandable) RAM, but it does seem to be quite a big price increase for that. So if you don't have big bucks available and want something now, I would recommend this as it works well with Plex and let's be honest, most of the money is in the drives themselves, which are easily transferred to another NAS in the future if needs be.I should also mention that the first NAS Amazon sent out came with two drives that had completely failed. No idea if that was just bad luck, or if something else was to blame, but needless to say it went straight back in exchange for a replacement. Amazon were fairly easy to deal with in that regard, but it was a bit annoying. I also note that Amazon's pricing is very erratic. I paid £530 for the 2 x 10TB Toshiba N300 deal, yet I've seen it increase to as much as £640 for absolutely no apparent reason, only to come back down again the next day. I would be pretty furious if I'd paid that much only to see it reduce the next day.

The Worst Piece Of Cr@# I Have Ever Bought
If you are expecting this device to work straight out of the box then think again.I deplore the cynical advertising that would have you believe that this is a easy to install storage system. It couldn't be more far from the truth.Firstly, if all you want is backup storage, this is simple enough provided you don't mind your data being transferred by snails. I have never met a slower system than this.Secondly, you will be lucky to get back into the system as it depends on whether it feels like letting you in or not.Thirdly, Synology couldn't give a damn about their customers. Look in their own forums and see how many issues the devices have and read the entries from customers begging Synology to listen to them and provide solutions. These go unanswered and the customers either solve the issues amongst themselves or give up and live with the issues. For a device that is meant to be accessible from anywhere in the world and allows you to view documents and videos, I wouldn't hold my breath. The mind numbing slowness and the endless list of issues makes this a non-starter.This device has effectively become an overpriced usb drive in my case. I am a fool to have believed the advertising and have been parted with my money. Lesson learnt.Edit: This NAS cannot have it's RAM upgraded, something that, at an additional cost might have made the device run at a usable speed.Do yourself a favour and avoid this like the plague.Edit: Well 6 months on and I was sort of getting along with the device until an update reminded me as to what a time-wasting device this is. I was well aware of the potential aggravation I could be letting myself in for but as some of the apps were being phased out for newer ones I had no choice. Fast forward 48 hours and I just want to take an axe to the effing thing. Just be aware that even if you reach a sort of equilibrium with this device, the manufacturer will insist on hitting you with poorly written software. I could have ordered all of my 10k photos in photobooks by now and sat down with a cup of tea or coffee, discussed most of them with my wife, all within the time it is taking for the system to update and index itself. Please do not buy this product unless you really know what you are letting yourself in for.Another Edit: This system does not have enough memory to run Synology's latest operating system! Less than a year old and I'm being told I either need to roll back to a previous version or buy a more expensive model that has more memory or has memory I can upgrade myself.
