Pepsi-Cola 1893, Ginger (12 Ounce Cans, Pack Of 12)

My daughter brought me 2 each of the 1893 Original, Black Currant, and 4 Ginger Pepsis on a recent trip. I could take or leave the Black Currant, and while the Original was okay, I can get regular flavored Pepsi any time. (OK. I get the real sugar thing, and I agree. But I am talking about the additional flavor of the drink.) HOWEVER, I could not get over the Ginger so when she went to the store for something else, I told her I wanted TWENTY of the Ginger Pepsis! I know they cost too much, but I figured they would only be here for a brief time period, and this would be my one window of opportunity. Well, she came back with 2 more, and THAT was my brief window. Neither she nor my husband could find any more though they looked in several stores. Fortunately I found this on Amazon, and I bought 4 - 12 packs. (Much cheaper than eBay prices.) Then I decided to see if I could find Pepsi Fire. Snagged 4 of the 12 packs right before they disappeared. Cleaned out a spot in my closet and hid my treasures from prying eyes (grandkids). My special needs daughter had spied 2 of my Pepsi Fire and poured them down the drain ("HOT") so I was not taking any more chances! I know I cannot get any more of the Pepsi Fire (believe me, I tried), but I do not know about the Ginger Pepsi. Anyone know if this will also be a flash in the pan? Or is this one here for a while? At least they are still on Amazon for the time begin! I must admit I love Ginger. However, I was surprised to read so many reviews mentioning Ginger Ale. My mind never went there! I cannot STAND Ginger Ale! YUK! But I DO love crystallized ginger and several ginger candies. If this disappears, I think I will try adding some ginger to a regular Pepsi. If that doesn't do it, then I will try crystallized ginger. Now that Pepsi has given me this flavor, I am going to hold onto it! Also going to try red hots in the Pepsi to see if I cannot make a substitute for the Pepsi Fire. I already add lemon oil to have Lemon Pepsi. That is the problem: Pepsi keeps giving us all these great flavors, and then they take them away! What is up with that? That's like giving a kid a five dip ice cream cone and letting him take three bites before taking it away from him. Just not right.....

Pepsi's 1893 Ginger Cola offering is a refreshing take on bringing a new product line to the public. Both the Ginger Cola and Cola have a taste that can be considered as being distinctly different than the Pepsi flagship brand. In order to fully appreciate the flavor profile of the Ginger Cola, it helps to have tried the original 1893 Cola, as well. The original 1893 Cola is described as containing kola nut extract, a malty flavor, aromatic bitters, pure sugar, and carbonated water. As to what it actually tastes like, the closest comparison that could be drawn is that it tastes like a more deeply flavored Royal Crown (RC) Cola. RC definitely has the soda which tastes most strongly of kola nut, which is the dominant flavor in the standard 1893 product. Where they are different is that the line of 1893 products contain sugar. This most strongly contributes to a heavier mouthfeel with the 1893, which is actually a good thing, as it helps to accentuate the flavor. For the 1893 Ginger Cola, you essentially are looking at an original 1893 Cola crossed with a ginger beer. Those expecting something more in the ginger ale family instead of a ginger beer will likely not like this product. It has an assertive ginger flavor, much like a Reed's Ginger Beer. The ginger almost, but not completely, overpowers the kola nut flavor. Enough of the kola nut flavor remains to set it apart from just being a ginger beer. Overall, both products in the 1893 line are high-quality soda products that I expect to not last in the marketplace long. What makes these products great is the quality of the ingredients, and what will kill it is that the retail price is generally too high for a product that most consumers will pass up. I just do not see the average consumer paying more for a twelve pack of soda than they would pay for a twelve pack of good beer. Personally, I enjoy good soda and limit my intake to a single serving per day. So, I will continue to have a few of these on-hand, and hope to be wrong about its ultimate fate.

I've spent a lot of time in Germany in the last several years, and they have just fantastic Ginger Ale. This is the first one in the US that I've had that was as good or better than what I've had in Germany. It's bright, bitey, flavorful, and ends with a bubbly kick. I love this Ginger Cola. While it is darker than any Ginger Ale I've had, it's not dark enough for me to consider it what I think of when I think of a traditional "cola" for American terms. The color is very similar to the color of the box, and I just consider this one seriously kickin' ginger ale! It is quite sweet, and does use real sugar. I haven't used it for mixed drinks, but would work great for that purpose. I paid quite a bit more than the per can price here at my local big box store, so I just picked up another case here. I hope it sticks around, it's a very pleasant experience. :)

I am delighted to try new, classic/old products, and this libation is no exception. My taste buds were awakened to a flavor unlike any other cola. I do not taste ginger or a ginger flavor that I am accustomed to as in ginger ale or ginger snaps; rather, I taste a zing with the cola flavor that gives it a snap that is just right. I especially appreciate that this soda is Certified Fair Trade. I have compiled research on egregious albeit legal (in foreign countries) practices of some companies, so I like to buy products from companies that are trying to meet Fair Trade standards like Social Responsibility (no child labor & worker safety compliance) and Environment Stewardship (reduction of greenhouse gases by not practicing slash & burn of Rainforests thereby helping to protect soil, water and existing biodiversity, as well as no GMOs. I think your brain will enjoy interpreting the flavors of a soda that is entirely different.

Pepsi Ginger cola is a very interesting drink. I love ginger soda and don't like pepsi (Coke drinker here) so thought it would be a short lived novelty in the house. Instead I have been buying a case about once a month for the household. That is pretty much the amount I put in the house of all of our favorite drinks every month. It is curious that this drink does not have an aftertaste. It is very smooth. It has combined the two flavors to make one very good drink. I was thinking about how it would do with a vodka mix but have not experimented...much.

Love this! Although I am decreasing my soda consumption in general, this one will stay on the list for the occasional treat. It is spicier than typical ginger ale, so if you're a low-spice person, it may not be for you. (To try to quantify that - it is not so spicy as to be "painful" by any means; but it is enough that I wouldn't chug it. It's more of a sipping drink.) My perception also is that it tastes less sweet than typical ginger ales, but I haven't compared the nutrition statements to verify whether it actually has less sugar or not.

Although this cola is made with quality ingredients, I find that it is too sweet to allow the ginger spice to come through. Tasting this beverage when it is cool (55 degrees F) the flavor and warmth of ginger is mildly present however, when chilled in the refrigerator to 39 degrees F, the prevailing taste is sugar. Since a soft drink like this is marketed primarily towards adults, I suggest that Pepsi should reduce the amount of sugar in this drink, and increase the amount of ginger flavoring. This should make a drink that is more palatable to adult tastes.

I am VERY disappointed by Pepsi's product packaging that precludes me from consuming the product. The cans are tall, the Pepsi packaging of this ginger-flavoured product flimsy (and that is being generous) and at least 1/3 of the cans in my standard Pepsi order are bulging at the top (and some, now, also, at both ends). (Previously I was advised by Amazon not to consume soda from cans that are deformed/bulging at an end). The advertised ginger taste sounded interesting and enticed me to order. However, I will not order this product again because of the budget-appearing packaging that compromises the ability to consume the product. UPDATE: I contacted Amazon, wrote that I thought it unsafe to re-ship the cans as a return. Since that time 3 cans have bulged on the bottom as well as on the top and can no longer stand. I am disposing of this item before hearing from Amazon because of concern about the expanding cans.
