Great book but best for advanced level practitioners

Looks at using intention and awareness in martial arts and life.. for those who studied with great teachers like mine Fong Ha they will understand the practice and be able to follow the exercises but for Form only or those who use Force and not sticking it will be hard to comprehend .. doing with awareness brings understanding..just doing or monkey see monkey do will not.

Five Stars

I am really enjoying this book-it is an incisive exposition of the internal martial art of Tai Chi .

Had great potential and interesting work, but.... see review

I cannot help but give 5 star.but first I have to say this writer denounces the name of Jesus Christ and promotes evolution, which btw is just another form of religion. But it is packed with valuable information and is exciting to read. I have to say the book is interesting once you get past his religious beliefs, the chapters on Post stance and zhaung guang. The book also describes much needed information on the internal such as breathing through the bones, Reverse Taoist breathing, meridians, the role muscles and and skin play in meditation, standing and awareness , stories of his Teachers, and much more to list now. Good Work and opened my eyes to true Yi Quan.

Diamond of a Text for Martial Artists

The best book I have read that explains how the internal arts work from a scientific view point. It is obvious an enormous amount of work went into the book, and even more so to distill the research into a coherent essence through the filter of the author's experience.Of note, it also tackles the topic of enlightenment through martial arts in an objective manner, cutting through much of the mysticism surrounding the topic. And stages of progression in the internal arts are spelled out and analysed. It gave me insight as to where I am at with my pursuit of the internal arts, and clarified what I know, am working on, and what Is ahead of me on my journey.I see this as a valuable and approachable text book for practitioners of martial arts, in particular, the internal arts.

In the top 3 of "best martial arts books I've read" . . .

I've read dozens of martial arts books, hard and soft, and this is one of the best, clearest objective references to what happens subjectively in the process of mastering an internal martial art at the highest level. And really can be applied to the development of hard martial arts at the highest level also. The personal breakthrough experiences with Master Tam, corresponding to higher stages of advancement in the author's martial practice, were particularly powerful and insightful. In the top category of martial arts books along with T.T. Liang / Stuart Olsen's Imagination Becomes Reality  Imagination Becomes Reality: The Teachings of Master T.T. Liang: A Complete Guide to the 150 Solo Posture Form , and Shi Ming / Siao Weijia's Mind Over Matter  Mind Over Matter: Higher Martial Arts .

A treasure

This is part of a welcome trend - western, scholarly thinkers who also are accomplished practitioners translating the theory in a way that accurately articulates it for the western mind with a firm focus on practical realization, and, within that trend, this is among the crème de la crème.Thanks for doing this work.

All the three books are good enough to understand tai chi and other internal power ...

All the three books are good enough to understand tai chi and other internal power stuff. TING JING in Chinese means listening to the power. Why listening? The balancing function is located in the inner ear of human. Any vibration no matter sound or energy is sensed via the three semicircular canals inside the ear to transmit to the brain. Through listening, tai chi master knows the balance of his opponent, not only his own balance. The highest level achieved by grand master of tai chi can be explained by latest neuroscience discovery of "Brain makes decisions before you even know it". Interested readers can browse [...] for more details of this eye-opening finding. Yi Quan means will or mind or intention boxing in Chinese. The highest level master can know his opponent's movement even before his opponent decides to move, of course on subconscious level. The master simply catches or receives your message of moving details such as direction and acceleration before seeing your actual movement. You don't have too much free will when you are fighting with a real tai chi master because he is fighting on the level of mind rather than something physical.By the way, I am not a tai chi student or any other martial art fan. I am a native Chinese but love to find out the secret behind tai chi and other internal energy work such as qi gong. I have a Chinese friend who can distinguish GMO food from organic food by simply looking at the photos of the food because of long term training of qi gong. So his perception is far beyond chemistry formulation testing in the lab. Chemically the food is the same but one is live and the other is dead in terms of energy field.
