They are a little more than an inch. I order comic book boards and finally after years of all my fabrics stacked on top of each other, I now have each fabric wrapped on a board and held with two of the alligator clips. Now when I open a drawer, I can see exactly what I have. I used 600 cardboards and 1200 clips. It took a while to organize it all but it was time we’ll spent with a great result. Out of the 1200 clips I used there was only one that was broken.

Q: Would these work if using 2 yards of cotton fabric wrapped around comic book boards or would that be too thick?

I've used this method for up to 9 yards. But I use the magazine size boards (8.5x11). I just clip the last couple of rounds together. I don't clip to the board. Even for the larger amounts of fabric, it makes for much neater storage.

Q: Could I use these clips to shorten up a small ribbon cable?

I use these to hold the end piece of folded fabric on comic boards. They work very well.
