Q: can this be used with closet pole socket

No it cannot. It is not strong at all and broke after a month with just a shower curtain. Plus the ends are connected to the pole.

Q: Would it be able to hold heavy drapes?

It says that it is up to 30 lbs. But I would not trust it. Mine does not lock and I cannot hold anything on it, or even keep it up.

Q: Is there any reason (appearance? grip?) that I couldn't use this in a doorway with sheetrock walls on either side to hang a curtain?

We use it in a window frame (painted Sheetrock) to hang curtains in our bedroom. There's enough tension and grip to hold it well.
