Q: I guess this is used for holding soap and making a lather, thereby replacing a need for a separate bowl, right? Or, would a bowl be better?

I use it both for holding my shave soap and making Luther. That is what is so nice about having a lid. Great product by the way.

Q: So if i have some leftover lather that i didn't use, i can just put the lid on this and use it the next day? (i'm new to this style of shaving)

It depends, if you are using shaving soap then yes you don't have to rinse the bowl and just cover it up and the lid fits nice and snug so it will retain the moisture. But if you are using shave cream then you will hardly have any lather left since in three passes you will use it up, so just rinse the bowl. I always wipe the bowl after every use to avoid any water marks. The finish of the bowl is amazing so you want to keep it that way. Since you are new to de shaving remember NO PRESSURE on the Razor and you will have a wonderful experience.

Both the bowl and the lid are made of stainless steel.

Q: is this Apollo bowl polished stainless steel or is it chrome plated?

I believe it is polished stainless but it is indeed just as bright as chrome. I bought one of these and like so many other buyers found the top to be 100% non removable once placed. It's a nice looking "something" as it sits along side my rather high-end shaving paraphernalia. Also, this bowl is too small - IF I COULD USE IT !! but that could be just my taste. Get a few of them and you could use them for large over-stated Christmas tree decorations.
