Great value and very fast, especially using TB3
Very fast, portable, convenient. My only niggle is that there are two modes of connection: Thunderbolt 1+2 and Thunderbolt 3 [USB-C] but the TB1+2 cable is hard connected and the TB3 isn't... it's not a huge deal but it does mean that if you want or need TB3 speed, you have to carry the TB3 cable separately. Aside from that, it mounts fast and from my experience works perfectly. I cannot comment on "rugged", as I don't think any drive should be mishandled and I'm certainly not going to do a life test. Do note that this is a platter drive, so no matter what "rugged" might indicate to you, if this is dropped when spooled, your data is gone forever as the platter or heads or both will be damaged. if you need truly rugged, you need a true SSD, not this. For me, I need to transfer loads of video from GoPro, Drone, and Stills Rig when traveling and this thing is blazing fast with a small footprint.

Truly Plug and Play
Very easy to use with my Lenovo laptop. Plug in and go. Have used both types of cord connectors with no problems. Probably overkill on the amount of space, but I'd rather have too much than too little. All those illustrations, photos, and videos add up. Does seem rugged and comes with a very nice case. Highly recommended.

Drive failed after 1.5 months
Ordered this hard drive because it has been rated to have a superior build quality and life expectancy. At first i was blown away by all the specs, waterproof, drop proof etc. I am a photographer and marketing specialist so these specs blew me away as I have had drives fail in the past and wanted to avoid having to pay to recover data and the stress that comes with it. When I received the drive everything seemed to be in tact. Sturdy drive, nice weight, good design quality. I began using the drive as my primary backup for the next few months. One morning I woke up to my drive not working which i found odd. I always store my drive in the case and in my desk (paranoia from having other drives fail lol). I spent the next few hours plugging and unplugging, googling and troubleshooting all websites around. Finally I gave up and called Amazon customer support. The representative was confused and "flabbergasted" that a LaCie drive known for its quality had failed only after 2 months of being purchased (Purchased on March 20th). He then said there is nothing amazon could do and to call lacie customer support. After the long wait i finally get thru to a rep. I tell them the problem and i can also hear the confusion in their voice. I am informed that the only thing lacie can do is have me download a program and if any data is salvageable i would have to pay the $100 fee to get the data off. I am confused at this because I have many important photos for clients, events, etc on this drive and the disconcern in the reps voice irked me a bit. I take the drive to a local computer repair shop i use near my hometown. There's nothing that they can do as the drive failed due to a hardware failure =/. I thought i could use this drive as a solid backup solution however i was wrong. My advice to anyone purchasing this device is to also have another form of backup whether it be cloud or another external drive. My advice to LaCie is to please not advertise the superiority of your products if they fail after a month and a half of usage. Or to go the distance to ensure your customers are helped recover your their data as you are a subsidiary of Seagate and have more than enough resources to recover data.

Recommend It
I have a 1TB. LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt & USB 3.0 that I have used flawlessly for several years. I got this 2T because I needed more backup storage. I have used them for backups of files, entire operating systems and time machine backups. I've never had any problems or regretted my purchase. I recommend this backup drive completely. This 2TB new one has the thunderbolt cable built in and it is non-removable. My 1TB has a removable thunderbolt cable. I preferred the removable type model because I can change the thunderbolt cable if I need a different length or for some reason it would need replaced.. The picture of this 2TB shows the inputs which led me to believe it was like my old one. But with that being said, it is still a reliable drive. Also comes with the 3.0 USB cable that is removable and a nice heavy duty carrying case. Once again, recommend it.

LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt USB-C 5TB Portable HD
I am bias. I have easily 10 of these drives already. All with Firewire 800, so I have used LaCie Rugged Drives for a while now. I have never had an issue with any of LaCie's Rugged line products, other desktop drive I have had issues with in the past. I would easily recommend anyone who needs portable drives that they use the LaCie Rugged Series. Friends that work in broadcast and others that travel extensively for work use the drives and have had few, if any issues.Plus this 5TB drive for the price ($250) was great considering I have seen other drives that were far more expensive. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an inexpensive reliable and portable high capacity HD to use with video or photography.

Rugged & Fast
After using Seagate portable hard-drives for years and continue to do so, I had been eyeing a LaCie Rugged for a few years. Then, finally, as this particular model's price came down, along with that I purchased a new Mac Mini, I decided to buy this particular Rugged model for my job, as I commute to and from home in varying weather. The transfer time for my 200+ gigs of music that I store on this drive is pretty good using the USB 3.0 interface Vs. 2.0. How'bout 45-minutes versus over an hour. And with the Thunderbolt capability, the transfer time is even shorter! All in all, this is one bad-ass drive. Of course, while the claim for this model says that it could survive a 3-feet drop, plus the fact that I baby all of my portable hard-drives, I prefer to err on the side of caution and carry it inside a hardshell case.

Rugged AND Smart!
This external hard drive is great. It's rugged and it has TWO TB of memory. I can use it with my new iPad or my laptop. The LaCie came with both cords. I love this thing. It's small, compact, and I can take it with me anywhere and everywhere. I will definitely buy from this seller again.
