A sleek, solid aluminum, American-made mechanical pencil that will last you a lifetime. The mechanical pencil has become a throw away item. They’re used by architects, designers, engineers and artists in studios all over the world, but they’re generally not items that you want to pull out of your pocket to show off. The Modern Fuel Mechanical Pencil is here to change that and has has been awarded a CORE77 consumer products design award for its efforts. This 0.5mm mechanical pencil is machined from one solid piece of aluminum, making it incredibly strong and durable. So durable in fact, that we’re confident it will last you a lifetime. If you ever have an issue with the pencil(s) you buy, we welcome you to send them back to us, and we’ll either fix your pencil or make you a new one. The pencil is machined from a solid ⅜” aluminum 6061 rod. This is the same metal used for aircraft fuselages and wings, so it is extremely lightweight yet incredibly durable. The weight of the pencil is perfectly balanced from end to end. The Modern Fuel Mechanical Pencil has been designed to become part of you — an heirloom to pass on to the next generation of makers and doers. We were determined to design a mechanical pencil that would be a testament to U.S. design and manufacturing, reduce waste and not break the bank. Having a single mechanical pencil that replaces the endless packs of plastic sitting in landfills and floating in our oceans can only be a good thing. In our design we have removed all of the lines, grips and knurled perforations typical of traditional mechanical pencil designs. This sleek design allows each pencil to be a blank canvas for its owner, to become worn in different ways over time and eventually take on the character of its user. Each pencil is hand-finished to blend out the seams and give it the appearance of one solid piece of metal, and a brushed surface finish is applied to keep it from slipping through your fingers.

terrible QC, weak springs, loose tolerance, extremely overpriced!
actuation/return spring is far too weakThe friction fit on the tailcap is far too loose.quality control is terrible. My pencil has chunks of material missing from the barrel. Mine also came with irregular non-uniform machine marks as well as being generally scratched up. The guy who makes these will probably tell you the scratches build character in some BS artsy way, but don't be fooled... This is just a way to screw the consumer out of a properly finished product and screw the consumer out of more money. The internal mechanism is an off the shelf part, which is fine, but again it does not justify the cost. For 70$ this should be hard anodized. There is absolutely NO finishing whatsoever. This pencil is a complete RIPOFF made by an amateur machinist. Please save your money and buy a 15$ drafting pencil... Pentel, Graphgear, Steadler, etc much higher quality standards and better features for a fraction of the price. In the end, this is a novelty item only because it looks like the plastic bic pencils we used as kids in school.

... get the pencil advertised on their website with a nicely machined interchangeable mechanism that could support multiple lead sizes
For $74 I was expecting to get the pencil advertised on their website with a nicely machined interchangeable mechanism that could support multiple lead sizes. What I received was an aluminum tube with a cheap plastic insert no different than a $2 pencil from the grocery store. It's really unfortunate, the original KickStarter pencils looked very promising. The current product is an overpriced disposable item advertised as an heirloom quality writing instrument. If you're in the market for a truly satisfying product you should keep looking.

A pleasure to use
I have 2 of these pencils, one in steel and one in brass. I do most of my writing and notetaking in pencil, usually with plain boring pentel bulk from Costco pencils. The description is right, I don't care about those pencils so they get loaned out or lost, and I never really enjoy using them. You won't get what a difference it is until you write with a good utensil that feels right in your hand, like this modern fuel pencil. I use these pencils probably 90% of the time now, and after having them for more than a year, I still haven't lost either of them, or had any issues with them. These are on the pricey side for a pencil, but like everything else, you get what you pay for, and you'll probably enjoy using one of these more than the throwaway pencil you might be using now.

Not what it portends to be
The pen cannot be opened to replace the ink cartridge. What a joke. Very disappointed.

Incredible Pencil!
I bought one of these pencils for myself and gave one as a gift, which they loved. They're easily the most elegant, well designed mechanical pencils I've ever seen. The quality is unreal and it's worked perfectly for about a year now.
