Ares Games Wings of Glory Duel Pack Fokker Dr.I Vs. SOP with Camel

I finally got around to playing this with my son, last week. It's instantly addictive, and we've already spent hours playing it on the bed mattress (which is the only big flat surface available in our apartment, bar the floor). It's particularly good with a soundtrack playing. I made one from movie clips, and play it on a loop: Neeeeeaaaoooooowww!!! Rat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat!!! We don't wear flying goggles and helmet when playing - but that's only because we don't have any. The packaging was a bit flimsy - and the box arrived with the contents falling out. Miraculously, nothing was missing. Great game.

Received much faster than expected and in perfect condition

This all you need to get started playing Wings of Glory. Pretty inexpensive way to get a high quality game with lots of replay value. This game also has the possibility -- both good and bad -- for tons of expansion. If you get hooked learning about World War I and playing this game like I did you may end up with over 100 planes.

This is not a "serious" wargame for gameheads, but a game that kids and parents can enjoy together. A 10 year old can easily grasp the basic rules, and will enjoy the physical activity of moving the models around. The simultaneity of play keeps the pace brisk and interesting - you can easily finish a 2 player game in 15 minutes with basic rules. The extended rules add a bit more interest for adults, as would adding two more planes for team play, though I think more than that might get a little tight. The models are really quite well done for the price, and beg to be displayed on your desk rather than locked in the game box. My one quibble is that the stands tend to come apart easily, which is annoying since you are constantly moving the planes on them - I'm going to glue mine together.

I was never really big into miniature games until I started playing Fantasy Flight Games' "Star Wars: X-Wing." That game really blew me away and I opened my mind to more miniatures possibilities. I picked up WizKids "Star Trek: Attack Wing" not long after and loved it as well. As an historian, I was intrigued by the same system used for WWI aerial combat. I got a copy of of Ares Games' "Wings of Glory WWI Duel Pack" and have really enjoyed it. The flight path system this game uses is very similar to "X-Wing" and "Attack Wing," though instead of using templates and dials for movement players select cards- three cards for every phase. Each turn players reveal one of their three cards and place one end of the fight path line under the base of the model (beautiful representations of WWI planes), and then move the model to the other end. If any planes end up in your plane's line of sight you've got a shot. If shot, you draw damage cards that can have significant consequences such as starting fires or preventing certain maneuvers. Many damage cards also boast numbers, which when added up can exceed your plane's ability to absorb damage, and the plane is destroyed. It's a great combat system that is very easy to learn and mountains of fun to play. If you like "X-Wing" or "Attack Wing," or if you're just looking for a new, fun game with a great historical theme, I highly recommend Wings of Glory.
