OK for young teens. You'd be dead if this was all you had
OK. Bit plain. My 12 year old likes it. Probably the right age group for it as well

Whoa ... What a Horrible survival book
At the time of this review (5/16/21), there were a total of 5 other reviews. 4 of the reviews were people who were Given the book Free and asked to give it a review, and even one of those wasn't a very good review. I seriously doubt that these nice people who were not planning to buy a survival book, had ever read any other survival book to compare this one to.- The Only other reviewer was Not given this book for free and said "You'd be dead if this was all you had"- I personally was both laughing and disappointed all the way reading through the book and was actually looking forward to throwing it in the trash after the last page, until the last standard page asked to leave a review on Amazon, if the reader "enjoyed" it. Well, I did laugh a lot so maybe that counts, even though I was Only supposed to leave a review IF I enjoyed it.- I have been a paid Federal professional in disaster response for 38 years, and a survival hobbyist for about 40 years and as such have read around 30 survival and woodcraft books.- This book is the worst that I have ever read. (The "About the Author" section in the back sounds kind of ok, until you read it carefully and understand that everything mentioned is very general and no specific training and no specific experience is actually referenced)- Most ideas written in the book are just common sense things, From page 163 ... "If do decide to build a fire, conceal it as much as possible." and "For safety reasons, never leave a fire unattended." (and yes, I quoted the first line correctly, it does Not say If YOU decide to ... It says "If do decide to build a ..."By the way, it doesn't really list page 163, I did the counting myself because it goes from page 161 through page 166 Without even having any page numbers listed.- The stuff that is more "survival related" many, many times is outdated or dangerous. I understand anyone can write a book about "Survival" but heavens, take some time to do some current research.- See page 79 "When the weather is extreme, you need to construct a shelter" ... no, no, no, we humans must keep our body temperature at or near 98.6 twenty-four hours a day or we die, this is what people in survival situations nearly always die from, it's called "Exposure." We Cannot tolerate being too cold or too hot for too long in Any situation. Even in the the spring and fall of temperate climates the temperature will drop low enough that if unprotected we will become hypothermic and die after several hours, let alone adding to the cold of night a slight drizzle that would get us wet and even colder. Even summer nights in the desert get very cold because the heat is not maintained from the ground.- See page 107 on putting a clear bag around a part of a tree. A worthwhile survival book, or someone who has tried it, will advise that for all day waiting you will only get a couple of tablespoons of bad tasting water and where in the heck are you getting a Giant Air-tight Clear bag able to go completely around a big branch full of leaves and how truly crazy difficult it is to do this without ripping the bag for 2 tablespoons of leafy tasting water ... and we do this when we are evading someone? This old, old idea isn't worth the time or the effort anyway, besides the near impossibility of having on hand a giant and clear bag that you can put around a big group of leaves and branches without ripping the bag at least a little bit. Overall, it is an inexperienced and a stupid thing to tell people that they can or should do.- See page 92 for a picture using a tall Unsupported wall of snow blocks and a 2nd line of single snow blocks to support a magically appearing tarp that you just happen to have ... and on the sides of this construction are a lot of tall plants standing upright on each side. Sure there is enough deep and packed snow to somehow saw out the 49 rectangular snow blocks used in the drawing, but in mid winter there still are tall, still leafy reed-like plants to use for the 2 sides standing upright and the plants are also unsupported? ... And the tall plants are standing so perfectly upright that they do not even lean on either loose unsecured edge of the tarp applying pressure to the tarp from the outside which would pull the tall unsupported wall of snow blocks to fall in towards the center of the "shelter?" And ... Thank goodness there would be no wind at Any time to push against the plants, or the tarp, or the unsecured wall of snow blocks. (Now we know why this is a drawing and not a photograph)If you have a tarp, there several ways to simply use that tarp for a better and faster shelter ... I Really wish you could see that drawing.- Oh, and there are lots of times he tells you to dig down into the dirt or snow to make a sleeping trough. Cold settles into the lowest parts of wherever you are. To Purposely make a lower level to sleep in is to purposely sleep Where It Will Be Colder in Any weather.Check out the "Tree-pit Snow Shelter" on page 89 & 90. It's a really big hole dug out of the snow deep enough for a man to stand upright in (so you can watch for bad guys, but the bad guys won't notice you taking a long time digging out a really really big hole). Besides taking at least a couple of hours to dig based on the drawn picture (If you had a shovel) all the surrounding cold air would settle into that deep pit where you are. Remember, it is cold enough for there to be enough snow to dig a 5 foot deep hole in the snow completely circling a tree, and cold enough so that the snow will stay in place (we hope) and not fall in to the hole and onto you. This is not a shelter, this is a way to spend a lot of time to build something dangerous and that you Should Not Sleep in because of how cold it will be in that hole..... And then, in many parts something worthwhile will be "mentioned," but only mentioned, and Not taught how an inexperienced person would actually be able to do the skill. Telling you about something, and yet not fully explaining How to Really do it ... seems helpful to the reader Until they have to do it and do know how to do it.- To write this review and give some actual examples caused me to flip through the book again, ... that was not a pleasant thing to do, it was a painful reminder of what is in this book and what is not in this book. I'm done, I hope this helps, now this book is going into the trash.
