BRILLIANT in every way.
There is so much to say about this movie that it can't be put into a general review. It is brilliant.A very good premise. A superbly worked out story arc. A fabulous nod to a whole bunch of SciFi adventure movies. It's a real crossover with a sharp script & humour, top acting, very realistic FX and well mixed sound editing. There is a niggle in one plot point where the issue is, "why didn't the creature just leave when it had the opportunity?"But apart from that it's a lot of fun. It's a youngsters adventure, with a hint of a crush story, a broken home story, a would-be movie maker's story, a military hush-up story, and a lot more besides.Loved the credits at the end.A great all-rounder.

Brilliant 80's Inspired Sci-fi Effort from J.J. Abrams
Although this film is probably aimed predominantly more at a younger target audience I really enjoyed it from start to finish as a fun family sci-fi edged adventure film, and if like me you grew up in the 80's and loved films like E.T, MAC & Me, Goonies, Gremlins, Stand By Me, Close Encounters etc then I think you will enjoy this too - it definitely has that early 80's Spielberg feel about it with plenty of magic and special effects and the group of kids are all well developed characters who are played very well by the actors and they make for an interesting little group on a very interesting adventure! I enjoyed the way the film unfolds without spelling everything out from the offset as the kids start to unravel the alien cover-up they have found themselves in the middle of but at the same time the plot etc is all simple enough to keep younger viewers engaged throughout. It might tug a little heavy on the sentimental strings here and there but you have to expect at least a little of that with a big Hollywood film of this type and overall its a really well balanced fun family movie.

A proper old fashioned Spielberg-y film
Although Abrams directed this, it's got all the hallmarks of a Spielberg (who produced) film from the early eighties.Kids on bikes, aliens/monsters... and a load of fun.The effects are great, the story is kinda familiar but still really well done, but the thing that makes this film so special is the amazing young cast. Without exception, they're excellent. The 4K disc is a really nice upgrade from the already good Blu-ray, and although it doesn't have a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, the audio will still blow you away. Also worth noting that some of the extras on the disc are genuinely interesting, particularly Abrams talking about Spielberg.Highly recommended!

Much better than its reviews suggest....
We were half-expecting to be disappointed after reading other reviews, but we thought this was a really well made film. The kids here are super smart, and the way you're kept guessing about what exactly they're dealing with until near the end makes the film more intriguing. There are some interesting characters who've been through difficult life experiences, and you get to know about this gradually as the film progresses.

Fun from start to finish
This film is fun from start to finish. It's part ET, part Stand By Me, part Alien, part all sorts of other fantasy/scifi movies, but I like how it doesn't attempt to pretend otherwise. The group of young actors do a brilliant job, drawing the audience in regardless of how unlikely the tale might be. To be fair, though, the characters and their lives are portrayed in some detail. It's a really well made film, not surprisingly with JJ Abrams directing, with lots of humour, some great oldies in the soundtrack and spectacular visual effects, but you can tell the influence of producer Steven Spielberg in some wonderfully gripping moments of suspense.

Reboot of 1979 Spielberg tropes.
Abraams, known for rebooting film and TV franchises, here reboots Spielberg the man: you'll think you're back in 1979, with all those things Spielberg was known for: weird alien type unexplained events that never actually get explained. With a bit of ET and the Goonies thrown in for good measure. Not much originality. An ok watch. But good choice of period pop music.

Another amazing JJ movie!
That GREAT film. I didn't know what to expect and thanks to Prime for including this in their subscription I watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it and will recommend it to others. I love the ending and the relationship that every character had with each other, what a well made movie, thanks JJ!

Good film, ending is ruined by Amazon poor quality video
Good film, but the ending, which is in a very dark setting, is so dark on Amazon video it's impossible to see what's going on. Not my TV, just Amazon video poor quality. Requested a refund, as I was forced to purchase the film from someone that would allow me to actually see what the hell was going on in the movie's finale. To Amazon's credit they did it without question.
