Not comprehensive at all
Using this book alone to teach about this part of history would be irresponsible of any educator. The two stars are simply for the pictures and writing, well done for 2nd or some 3rd grade. Otherwise, it is written solely from a white colonist perspective. It does mention women on one page toward the end - thanks. There is nothing about Indigenous Peoples except that the Pilgrims were "rude" to them, so the Native Americans retaliated and in turn enslaved the settlers. No really, that's it. It does not even acknowledge African or African American presence. Because of this book, I actually ended up creating a lesson on perspective and used this book as an example of how history can be terribly distorted if one only learns a single perspective. Creating your own materials using Howard Zinn's A Young People's History of the United States and Ronald Takaki's A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America is a much better option. Unless you're also teaching a lesson on perspective, do your students a favor and do NOT buy this book.

A fun read even for adults!
I homeschool my 2nd grader, and this year we are diving deep into early American history. This book is hands down my favorite children's history book we've read so far. The pages are full of big, colorful, lively illustrations that really put you in the moment that's being described. The author also does a great job of writing a tight, concise explanation of the lead-up to and early years of the Revolutionary War. The language is also really thrilling, with vibrant words and short paragraphs that keep the story rolling. There truly were no dry areas. My child was never bored and even requested to keep reading after a chapter had concluded. The chapters are brief (good for short attention spans of young children), but are jammed full of info. Additionally, as an adult, I really enjoyed the book and learned quite a few new facts. I just can't say enough good things about this text. As a final note, the back cover recommends the book for 2nd grade and up. I concur this book is best for kids age 7+.

Easy to Understand
Home schooling the grandchildren is a challenge. I needed a way to engage them in the history of our country. This book did it. The illustrations are detailed and fit the story. The text is accurate but easy for them to understand. The boys are 8 and 12 so finding a book suited to them both is amazing!

Excellent!! Mom Approved!
As a homeschooling mom and one who was not born in the US, I am always looking out for historical books that will make American History not only easy for me understand, but also fun for the kids. This book is beyond excellent, it is absolutely fabulous!!! This is by far the best, simpliest and most interesting account of the events that led to the revolutionary war that I have ever read ( I have read plenty).
