PLATINUM Fountain Pen, Black Body (DPQ-700A#1)

I really like this inexpensive Platinum fountain pen. This has a plastic body that resembles the classic dip pen shape (and length) and is great for a desk or pen case that is VERY LONG. It has a very nice nib that is fine or very fine size. This is a surprisingly good pen. I have lots of Fountain pens, dip pens and everything that goes to their care and maintenence. This is one of my favorites even though it is a bit light feeling for my preference, it has smooth, fluid lines and writes well. This pen is cheaper than the ink adapter you would likely use for it.

I am extremely pleased with this fountain pen. It is light weight which is wonderful for extended writing sessions (or for anyone with hand pain.) It delivers a fine, yet easily visible/readable line. Despite generally preferring medium pens, I LOVE this particular fine nib. It does not feel dry or scratchy. The cap gives a nice click when fully closed. You should note that the cap does not post to the end of the pen, which I do not mind in the least. I have been writing with it extensively with the included cartridge for several weeks now and it has not yet run out of ink and the pen has shown no signs of being inferior in any way. The included carbon ink has been water resistant/proof on all the papers I tested and does not feather, bleed to the other side or smear. This included testing and using on good quality papers, standard copy paper and even thin dollar store notebook paper. I use this pen mostly for writing and also tried it for artwork. It has become my main pen for writing at my desk. I am highly satisfied and recommend this pen.

Good pen worked well unfortunately, I lost it after one year

This is my art instructor's favorite pen to use for sketching houses, and she's a calligrapher, so is familiar will all kinds of products. Smooth ink flow. I will get another one and put sepia colored in it. Easy to use - and I am not a big fan of fountain pens. They are usually messy, but not this one.

I was working on my sketchbook, this fountain pen is brand new with almost no use. Ím trying it for the second time because the first time that I tried to use it, was not working for me, so I did the previous sketch with another pen. The lines turn out exceedingly thin and irregular, even thought the cartridge is new the pen is not working. Horrible, not comparable to the first Platinum pen that I purchased here, which is currently unavailable and was of great quality. I do not recommend this product. Switch to another brand. Be aware that the ink cartridge included IS NOT waterproof ink.

I am only writing this review because I want people to keep buying this product, in order that Platinum continues to make it. I am an artist, and I do a lot of pen and ink work. I own a number of hideously expensive fountain pens, among the other various materials inhabiting what serves as my studio. That said, this pen, after only a few hours, has become one of my very favorite fountain pens. The pen I received is apparently an ef, and it is just that. As a matter of fact, it makes lines that look very much like the .2 Rotring Isograph. I want Platinum to keep making this pen because it is an incredible tool, independent of the cost. The cost is so low it borders on the absurd. I almost didn't buy this pen because of the reviews. Don't let the mediocre/negative reviews sway you. There are people who like fountain pens because they are fountain pens. They obsess over nonsensical issues, such as whether the nib is visible when capped. They are bothered by things such as whether the clip lines up with the nib if the body is transparent. In short, they obsess over things that do not matter to people who value these items as tools, rather than oddities to be collected as a hobby. These also tend to be the people who complain about this pen. I question the value in comparing the pen to the previous version, particularly when there are quite a few who suggest the actual performance of the two pens is pretty much the same. I also question the logic of buying a $9 pen, with a JAPANESE, EXTRA FINE nib, and expecting it to write like a double broad, Mont Blanc 149. Although their rationale makes little (read NO) sense to me, their number is legion and they are typically the ones driven to remark ("review" lends validity to their remarks; I won't do that) negatively on an instrument such as this. For those of you who like to draw, and KNOW HOW TO DRAW WELL, you will likely find this pen an incredible value, and a formidable tool to be added to your arsenal, particularly if you value the inking process as performed with a traditional dip pen. This pen makes lines finer than both of my Pilot 14k posting nibs. It is moderately stiff nib (it is steel), but not a "nail". It travels across quality paper with a satisfying level of "feedback", very much like the experience of using a G pen or other dip pen. I like mine so much, I ordered a second one the next day. I am thinking maybe I should have ordered a dozen. Working with this pen is so unusually enjoyable, that I often FORGET that I am NOT using a dip pen. It is that good. I keep thinking I need to stock up so I don't run out. Weird. Platinum makes superb nibs. Seriously. NOBODY makes better nibs at a better price. I own a few Pilot and Sailor steel nibs as well as many gold nibs, and this gives up nothing to any of them. The only steel nib I find comparable is the nib on the Sailor Pro color. Buy two. Now. Before it's too late.

I have owned a couple other pens made by Platinum. If you tried them then you know that they come with a very pleasant to write with nibs. This one seems to be the same nib and the same simple feed part as their popular preppy pens come equipped with. For me it means it writes very well, has good ink flow, and feels “smooth” or “soft” when writing. To be fair all fountain pens will create a feeling of “scratching” against the paper. That is normal. But this and other Platinum pens have less of it. The one thing I have to mention for people who want to have an idea before buying. The pen is very lightweight. It does not mean it is inferior in any way. Actually a lot of people want a very light pen. Also because the body of the pen is made of plastic make sure not to play roughly with it in your hands because if you try bending it, it can bend by a few degrees and then look “warped”. If pens that are not perfectly straight annoy you then this is something to be aware of. Also, by the pen design it is not meant to have a cap attach to its back. So don’t try to post it.

I wrote a previous review, and want to update it after a few days of use of the pen. I have not used it for two days and the flow has stopped. I have tried dipping the tip of the nib in water, and also tried giving it a shake to mix up the pigments in the ink. No luck. Is it just me or is it the pen? The old type of Platinum desk pen that I had for years, would write immediately after weeks of disuse! And that was an extra fine nib while this is a fine. Have they also changed the interior workings of this pen? I am very disappointed! Previous review: I lost my previous extra fine Platinum pen while sketching on a plane, and did not discover the loss till the next day. I bought this one as a replacement. It looks different to my original, and has a different type of cap. Nevertheless, so far it seems to work very well and seems to have the same line as my previous extra fine, although it was described as fine on Amazon. I love these pens for sketching! They also are specially designed for the waterproof carbon inks.

Très bonne surprise. Pour un stylo à 10€ il est vraiment très bien. Pour l'écriture il est un peu raide, mais ce n'est pas dérangeant parce qu'il a par ailleurs un bon débit d'encre donc la plume n'accroche pas. Pour le dessin, la raideur de la plume est là un plus qui est très agréable à l'usage. J'ai une plume de la même marque qui m'a coûté 5 fois plus cher, qui est beaucoup plus souple et plus douce, mais je préfère celle-ci pour le dessin. En revanche, j'ai eu de léger soucis de débit d'encre en croquis, il faut parfois arrêter quelques secondes de dessiner pour laisser la plume se gorger d'encre à nouveau. Pour finir, j'ai apprécié la finesse de la plume, beaucoup plus fin que ce qu'on peut trouver chez Lamy ou Waterman. Ajoutons que le design est sympa, ça tient bien en main, bref, une très bonne plume, et à un super tarif.

I got my first Platinum pen about 30 years ago when I was in Tokyo and they have been my favourites since that time. The nibs on these pens are different from the Carbon Ink pen and are equally pleasing. In contrast to the Carbon Ink pen, the body of the pen is a little wider and the cap more robust. These are primarily desk pens, not really designed for fitting in a pocket due to their length of almost 7.5". I equipped mine with refillable cartridges for the sake of economy though cartridges are available. They write very smoothly for a pen at this price point. I recommend this pen for not-absolute-beginners because the nib is fine and the balance is different due to the shape and length. These (I have 2) are better than my Lamy Safari and much more budget conscious.
